Singapore Insight: The headline rate is rarely the rate you pay

Our example applies the 17% headline corporate tax rate for simplicity. In reality, qualifying new companies pay considerably less in their opening years.

Under the Tax Exemption Scheme for New Start-Up Companies, the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore grants, for each of a qualifying company’s first three consecutive Years of Assessment:

75% exemption on the first S$100,000 of normal chargeable income.

A further 50% exemption on the next S$100,000 of normal chargeable income.

That is a maximum exemption of S$125,000 per Year of Assessment. Companies that do not qualify fall under the partial tax exemption instead. Always check the exemptions before assuming the headline figure.

If the profit and loss is a video of your quarter, the balance sheet is a photograph. It freezes one moment and asks a single question: what do we own, and what do we owe?

Every balance sheet obeys one rule that never breaks. Assets equal liabilities plus equity. If it does not balance, something is wrong with the books, not with the maths.

Put plainly: everything the business owns was paid for either by money it borrowed or by money the owners put in and kept. There is no third source. That is why the two sides always match.

Notice the balance at the bottom: S$140,000 of assets is funded by S$55,000 of liabilities and S$85,000 of equity. The two sides meet, exactly as they must.

• Can we pay our short-term bills? Compare assets you can turn into cash soon against debts due soon. Accountants call this the current ratio, which the Singapore Department of Statistics defines as the ratio of current assets to current liabilities, a direct measure of liquidity.
• How much do we owe versus own? A business funded mostly by debt is more fragile when revenue dips, because the loan repayments do not pause when sales do.
