Fuzzy wishes like “better” and “more” will give you the average at best. Use outcomes that are objective and quantifiable unless you’re going for style.

Context: What does the model need to know?

This is where most of the art lives. Who is the audience? What is the goal? What constraints exist? What has already been tried? Contextual prompting is prompt engineering alchemy. It’s where artful intent leveraged by structured system thinking generates the most satisfying results.

Well-designed context is the difference between a generic reply and one that results in what it is that you actually wanted.

Format: How should the answer be structured?

Specify the form of the output. A table, a numbered list, a 200-word paragraph, a script with timestamps, an email with a subject line, an infographic, a JSON-formatted document, or a document in bullet point form

Constraints: What are the rules and limits?

Constraints: UK English, no emojis in the first line, do not use the word “delicious”.

The second prompt cannot help but produce something usable. You have removed almost all the guesswork.

The brand voice is important but subjective, so be sure to test out a few.

Prompt Frameworks That Make Quality Repeatable

The five blocks are the ingredients. A framework is the recipe that helps you combine them the same way every time, so quality stops depending on mood or memory.

You do not need many. Two will carry you a long way.

The R-T-F framework (fast and everyday)

Then you add the sixth, unwritten step that lives outside the acronym: iterate. Run it, read it, refine it.

That prompt would return three structured, usable concepts, not a generic essay about Mother’s Day. The framework did the heavy lifting.

Technique 1: Assign a Role and Persona

Role prompting is the fastest way to raise output quality, and it is the most underused.

When you tell ChatGPT to “act as” a specific kind of expert, you prime it to use that expert’s vocabulary, priorities and standards.

Be specific about the expert

“Act as a marketer” is weak. “Act as a performance marketer who manages Google Ads budgets for Singapore SMEs” is strong.

The more precise the role, the more the answer narrows from general knowledge to relevant expertise. And the persona can be a fictitious character or historic figure. It can also be a committee of personas or an inanimate object. Finally, you can make up your own.

Add the audience as a second persona

Roles work in pairs. Define who is speaking and who is listening.

“Act as a financial adviser explaining the CPF system to a fresh graduate” controls both the expertise and the reading level in one line.

Layer in standards and constraints

You can stack expectations onto a role. “Act as an editor who follows UK English and the principles of plain language” gives the model a quality bar to hit.

Role prompting pairs naturally with persuasive writing. If your task involves copy, it helps to understand the fundamentals of persuasive copywriting so you can judge whether the role is delivering.

Technique 2: Load the Context ChatGPT Cannot See

If role prompting is the fastest win, context is the biggest one. Most of the gap between a mediocre answer and a brilliant one is simply missing context.

Tell it the goal, not just the task

There is a difference between “write a LinkedIn post about our webinar” and “write a LinkedIn post about our webinar whose goal is to drive sign-ups from finance managers, not just likes”.

Stating the underlying goal lets the model optimise for what you actually care about.

Provide the raw material

Paste the source. If you want a summary, paste the document. If you want a reply, paste the original message. If you want a rewrite, paste the draft.

Asking the model to work without the source forces it to invent, which is where errors creep in. In many cases, you can start with the end in mind by providing a similar goal in an existing report or spreadsheet. That’s a lot of context right in those documents.

The second version produces a message that protects the relationship while still getting paid. The only thing that changed was the context, and it changed everything.

Technique 3: Control the Format, Length and Tone

You can dramatically change how useful an answer is just by dictating its shape. This is one of the easiest levers to pull and one of the most neglected.

Name the output structure

You can be explicit: “Give me this as a table”, “as a 5-step checklist,” “as a one-paragraph executive summary followed by bullet points”.
