What is Figma and Why Singapore Designers Use It

TL;DR: What you will learn

• Figma is a cloud-based interface design and prototyping tool that runs in your browser, so there is nothing heavy to install.
• Multiple people edit the same file live, which kills the scattered PNG and email thread problem.
• In Singapore, it is used by product designers, startup founders, marketers, and agency teams for websites, apps, and pitch decks.
• It dominates because it is collaborative, affordable to start with a free plan, and works the same on Windows and Mac.

Understanding Figma As A Design And Collaboration Tool

So what is Figma, in plain terms? It is a cloud-based design tool where interface design, prototyping and team collaboration all happen inside one file that lives in your browser.

Think of it like Google Docs, but for design. Instead of a document, you are working on screens, buttons and layouts, and instead of emailing versions back and forth, everyone works on the same live file.

That single idea, one shared file in the cloud, is what makes Figma feel so different from older desktop-bound tools that lock your work onto one machine.

A Browser-Based Design Canvas

Because Figma runs in the browser, you can design on almost any laptop without heavy installs or a powerful machine.

This matters a lot for a lean Singapore startup where the team is often split across mixed Mac and Windows machines. Nobody has to worry about whether a file was made in a Mac-only app that a Windows colleague cannot open.

You just log in, open the file, and start working. There is a desktop app too, but it is optional, and the files themselves always sit in the cloud.

Real-Time Collaboration Like Google Docs

Here is where Figma really earns its reputation. It is multiplayer, so several people can edit the same file at the same time, and you can see everyone’s live cursors moving around the canvas.

You can leave comments pinned directly onto a specific button or heading, tag a teammate, and let them reply in that exact spot. No more vague feedback buried in an email thread.

Picture a Singapore agency running a Zoom call with a client to review a landing page mockup. Instead of trading files after the meeting, the designer nudges the hero image, the client watches it happen live and approves the copy on the spot.

A marketing team can plug this straight into a broader planning workflow, sitting alongside the other tools they already use from an extensive list of digital marketing tools and platforms, so design decisions do not sit in a silo.

At least three-quarters of my job as a content designer is listening and collaborating, not just with other design disciplines, but with the organisation at large.

Where FigJam Fits In

Alongside Figma sits FigJam, its online whiteboard.

FigJam is built for the messier, earlier thinking: sticky notes, brainstorms, workshops and customer journey mapping. Where Figma is for polished screens, FigJam is for ideas that are not finished yet.

A product team might run a remote workshop in FigJam to map out how a user moves through a booking flow, then take those insights straight into a Figma file to design the actual screens.

The two connect, so your thinking and your final design live in the same ecosystem.

The Core Features That Make Figma Powerful

When people ask me what is Figma capable of, I never start with the buttons. I start with the problems it solves for a design team that is drowning in inconsistent files and endless email attachments.

Let me walk you through the features that actually matter in a working week, using a scenario I see often: a Singapore fintech startup building both a mobile app and a marketing site that need to stay on-brand.

Frames, Components And Auto Layout

Frames are your canvases. A frame can be an iPhone screen, a desktop landing page, or a single card, and everything lives inside them.

The real power sits in components. Instead of copying and pasting a button a hundred times, our fintech team builds one master button component, then reuses it everywhere.

Change the master once, and every instance across the app and website updates instantly. This is what replaces the old nightmare of hunting through fifty files to fix one shade of blue.

Auto Layout handles the responsive behaviour. When someone types a longer label into a form field, the field grows to fit rather than breaking the layout, which is exactly what you want when your KYC form has both short and long field names.

Together, these three keep a design system consistent, so the app and marketing site genuinely feel like the same brand.

Prototyping And Interactive Flows

Static mockups leave too much to the imagination. Figma lets you link frames together into a clickable prototype, so you can tap through the entire onboarding journey as if it were a real app.

This is where prototypes earn their keep: a stakeholder can click through an entire onboarding journey and flag an unnecessary screen before a single line of code is written, and the fix takes minutes instead of a sprint.

That is the point. Catching a flawed flow in a prototype costs almost nothing, while catching it after developers have built it costs weeks of rework and real money.

Plugins, Variables And Dev Mode

Figma has a large plugin ecosystem that extends what the tool can do. There are plugins to generate realistic placeholder content, check colour contrast for accessibility, or pull in icons, which saves the manual copying you used to do by hand.

Variables let you define values like brand colours or spacing once, then swap between light and dark themes or different languages without rebuilding screens.

Dev Mode is where handoff happens. Developers open the design and read exact measurements, colours, and CSS values, so they are not guessing or messaging you at 11 PM asking for a hex code.

Just as knowing the difference between copywriting and content writing sharpens how you write, understanding these features sharpens how you design and hand off work.

Why Figma Became The Default Choice Over Adobe XD And Sketch

A few years ago, the tool debate among Singapore design teams was genuinely three-way: Sketch, Adobe XD, or Figma. Today that conversation is mostly over, and understanding why tells you a lot about what Figma is actually solving for.

The Browser-First Advantage

The single biggest shift came from where Figma lives. It runs in your browser, so there is nothing to install, no licence to manage, and no version mismatch between teammates.

That sounds small until you feel the friction it removes. A client can open a link you send and leave a comment without buying software or learning anything, and a developer can inspect your spacing and colours from the same URL.

Sketch, by contrast, remains Mac-only to this day. If your team is on Macs and you hire a Windows-using contractor, which happens constantly in Singapore’s freelance market, that person simply cannot open your files.

Picture a small agency running Sketch that wants to bring on a talented junior designer who works on a Windows laptop: they either buy her a Mac or find a workaround. With Figma, she would be in the file within minutes of accepting the invite.

This comparison reflects each platform’s publicly listed features and pricing as of August 2026, drawn from Figma’s, Adobe’s, and Sketch’s own product and pricing pages. Individual plans and features may change after publication.

Pricing that Lowered the Barrier

Figma’s free Starter plan never expires and is genuinely usable for individuals and small projects, though it caps you at 3 design files and 3 FigJam files, so a small team collaborating on a real project outgrows it quickly. Students and educators can access professional-level features at no cost through Figma’s Education plan. For someone learning design or freelancing on the side, that still removes most of the entry barrier.

Adobe XD tried to compete, but it was tethered to the Creative Cloud ecosystem and never matched Figma’s zero-friction sharing. After Adobe and Figma mutually terminated their US$20 billion acquisition deal in December 2023 amid EU and UK regulatory opposition, Adobe placed XD into maintenance mode, leaving teams that had standardised on it with a tool receiving no new features.

That discontinuation pushed a wave of designers to migrate, and most of them landed on Figma rather than going back to Sketch.

Built for How Local Teams Actually Work

The deciding factor in a small market like ours is rarely a single feature. It is the reality that your designer, your developer, and your client rarely share the same operating system or software budget.

Figma is platform-agnostic, so a designer on macOS, a developer on Windows, and a client checking a proposal on a Chromebook all collaborate in the same file at the same time.

Figma won because it made collaboration the default, not an add-on. In a hiring market where you cannot afford to reject good people over their choice of laptop, that flexibility is worth more than any individual feature comparison.

How Singapore Designers And Teams Actually Use Figma

When people ask me what Figma is used for in practice, I tell them to stop thinking of it as a lone designer’s tool. In Singapore, it is more like a shared meeting room where designers, marketers, developers, and even the founder all show up in the same file.

In-House Product And UX Teams

The bigger the team, the more Figma earns its keep. Banks, fintech companies, and gov-tech outfits use it to maintain design systems, which are shared libraries of buttons, colours, and components that keep every screen consistent.

GovTech is a good example here. Its Singapore Government Design System (SGDS) publishes a Figma UI kit that any team building a government-adjacent service can install and reference, rather than reinventing patterns from scratch.

Many local startups do the same. When a UX designer updates a component in the master library, every product screen that uses it updates too, which saves hours of tedious rework and keeps ten different screens from drifting apart.

Agencies And Freelancers Serving SME Clients

For agencies and freelancers, the killer feature is the shareable link. Instead of emailing a heavy PDF and waiting three days for feedback, I send an SME client a single URL.

The client opens it in a browser, no account or software install needed, and leaves comments directly on the mockup. That “can you make the logo bigger” note lands right on the logo, so there is no confusion about which logo they mean.

This is how sign-off actually happens now. A freelancer pitching a new website for a local dental clinic or a home-grown skincare brand can share three homepage directions, watch which one the client reacts to, and lock the decision in the same afternoon.

Marketers Building Landing Pages And Social Assets

Here is the part that surprises people: some of the heaviest Figma users I meet are marketers who never trained as designers. They use it to mock up campaign visuals, Instagram carousels, and landing pages before anything gets built.

Picture a local F&B brand, say a bubble tea chain running a National Day promo. The marketing team drafts the promo landing page in Figma first, complete with the hero banner, the discount code block, and the menu grid.

They make it clickable so the founder can tap through the flow and approve it. Only then does the page get handed to the developer, who rebuilds it faithfully in WordPress instead of guessing from a flat image.

That prototype-first habit pairs neatly with a proper campaign plan, and if you want to structure that side, this guide on how to create a great landing page and content calendar workflow is worth a read.

The real value is not any single feature; it is that design, marketing, and dev finally work off one live file instead of three conflicting versions. That shared source of truth is exactly why Figma spread so fast across Singapore teams.

Getting Started With Figma As A Beginner

Let me walk you through what your first afternoon actually looks like, because the biggest hurdle is not talent; it is just opening the tool and clicking around without a plan.

Picture a Temasek Polytechnic student or a marketing executive thinking about switching into UX. You have heard everyone answer what Figma is with “the design tool everyone uses”, but you have never built anything. That changes today.

Setting Up Your Free Account And First File

Go to figma.com and sign up with your school or personal email. The free Starter plan is genuinely enough for a beginner, so you do not need to pay a cent to get going.

Once you are in, click “New design file” from the dashboard. You will land on a blank canvas that can feel intimidating, so do one small thing first: press F for the Frame tool, then pick a preset like iPhone 14 from the right panel.

That single frame is your artboard. You have now created something you can actually design on, which is the whole point of day one.

Learning The Interface Without Feeling Overwhelmed

Do not try to memorise every icon. The layers panel on the left, the properties panel on the right, and the toolbar up top are the only three areas you need at the start.

Instead of watching twenty scattered YouTube clips, head into the Figma Community tab and duplicate a free starter kit or a simple wireframe template. Poking around inside a finished file teaches you far faster than staring at an empty one.

If self-learning stalls and you keep hitting the same walls, structured hands-on training helps. You can use your SkillsFuture Credit to offset the cost of a guided course, and career switchers often shorten their learning curve dramatically once someone points out the shortcuts they were missing.

Your First Simple Project

Keep the ambition tiny and finishable. Pick one of these for your first portfolio piece:

• A one-screen mobile app: a login screen or a food ordering card
• A simple landing page mockup for a fictional local café or gym
• A single “Contact Us” section with a form and a button

Drop in rectangles for images, use the Text tool for headings, and grab colours you like. Then connect two frames with a prototype link so a button “clicks” through to a second screen.

Finally, hit Share and copy the link. Being able to send a working prototype to a friend feels like a real milestone.

Once you have that first file, treat Figma like any craft you hone over time, alongside other free and useful tools to add to your workflow as your projects grow.

Figma And Data Privacy Considerations For Singapore Businesses

Once your team gets comfortable with what Figma is and starts building real projects, a fair question comes up: where do all these files actually live, and is that safe?

The honest answer is that your Figma files sit on Figma’s cloud servers, not on your own laptop or your company’s local drive. That is what makes real-time collaboration possible, but it also means you should think carefully before you drop sensitive information into a design.

PDPA And Personal Data In Mockups

If you design forms, dashboards, or account screens, it is tempting to fill them with realistic data so the mockup looks convincing. That is exactly where you need to pause.

Under Singapore’s Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA), personal data includes things like customer names, email addresses, phone numbers, and NRIC-style identifiers. The moment those real details go into a Figma file, you are storing customer data in a cloud tool, and you are accountable for how it is handled.

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) is the body that enforces the PDPA, and it expects organisations to protect personal data at every stage, including internal design work.

This is not a reason to avoid Figma. IMDA has been actively encouraging SMEs to adopt digital tools, and Figma fits neatly into that push, so the goal is simply to use it responsibly.

The simplest habit is to use placeholder or dummy data. Instead of a real customer record, use something obviously fake like “Tan Ah Kow, ahkow@example.com” so nobody mistakes it for a live account.

Sharing Permissions And A Real Scenario

Here is a scenario that plays out often: an e-commerce team builds a checkout prototype using screenshots of real orders, then sets the file link to “anyone with the link can view” so a freelancer can review it quickly.

That public link, once forwarded or indexed, could expose real names, addresses, and order amounts to people who were never meant to see them. It is an easy mistake and one that is genuinely avoidable.

To keep things tidy, build a few simple practices into your workflow:

• Use dummy data in every prototype rather than real customer records.
• Set share links to specific people or your organisation, not “anyone with the link”, when a file touches sensitive content.
• Review organisation-level access controls periodically so ex-colleagues and inactive freelancers lose access.

Treat your Figma sharing settings as a privacy control, not just a convenience feature, and most PDPA risk disappears before it ever becomes a problem.

Building Career-Ready Figma Skills In Singapore

If you have been browsing design job listings in Singapore lately, you have probably noticed a pattern: Figma sits near the top of almost every requirements list. Once you understand what Figma is and how central it has become to product teams, that pattern makes sense.

Why Employers Screen For Figma

UX and UI roles, product designer positions, and even many marketing and content design jobs now assume you can open a Figma file and get to work.

Recruiters at local tech companies, banks, and agencies often treat Figma fluency as a baseline, not a bonus. When a hiring manager at a fintech scale-up shortlists candidates, they want to see that you can navigate frames, components, and shared libraries without a lengthy handover.

Here is the honest part: a certificate on its own rarely wins the offer. What moves the needle is a portfolio that shows real thinking, the kind employers describe when they talk about the digital marketing career resources and skills employers look for.

Funding And Pathways That Lower The Barrier

The good news is that upskilling does not have to cost a fortune or a career break.

SkillsFuture Singapore (SSG) accredits many hands-on design courses, and eligible Singaporeans can offset fees using their SkillsFuture Credit. That makes a structured Figma course far more affordable for a working professional paying out of pocket.

For those making a bigger jump, Workforce Singapore (WSG) supports Career Conversion Programmes that help mid-career individuals move into in-demand roles, including design-adjacent tracks. If you are switching industries entirely, these pathways can subsidise training and ease the transition.

A Realistic Career Switch Scenario

Picture a mid-career marketer in Singapore, someone who has spent years running campaigns and briefing designers but never built interfaces themselves.

They want to move into a UX-adjacent role, perhaps a product marketing or content design position, where understanding the design tool is expected. They start by learning Figma basics, then rebuild one of their own past landing pages as a clean, componentised design in Figma.

Next, they redesign the onboarding flow of an app they use daily and document their decisions. A third project, maybe a small design system, shows they can think in reusable parts.

Two or three focused portfolio projects will do more for your employability than any single certificate.

That is why I always steer people towards structured, hands-on training rather than passive tutorials. When you learn by building real projects with feedback, you finish with both the skill and the portfolio that Singapore employers actually want to see.

Common Mistakes Beginners Make In Figma And How To Avoid Them

When people first learn what Figma is, they tend to make the same handful of mistakes, and I have made most of them myself. The good news is that each one has a simple fix once you know what to look for.

Ignoring Components And Auto Layout

Early on, most beginners copy and paste a button twenty times across their screens. When the client asks to change the button colour, you are now editing twenty separate buttons by hand.

It is a common story: a designer spends an entire afternoon on a change that should have taken ten seconds. Build reusable components and use Auto Layout from the start so that a single edit to the master component updates everything that references it.

The fix is to create a component the moment you notice you are duplicating an element, then wrap it in Auto Layout so spacing and padding adjust automatically as content changes.

Messy Layer And File Naming

Nothing breaks collaboration faster than a file full of layers called “Rectangle 47” and “Frame 12”. This becomes a real problem the day a Singapore agency hands a file to a client or a developer who has never opened it before.

Picture a freelancer working with a local SME on a booking site. Her Figma file had unnamed layers, screens scattered without pages, and no structure, so when the SME’s developer tried to build from it, he could not tell which frame was the final design. The handoff slipped by a week while she cleaned everything up.

Name your layers and frames as you go, group related screens into clearly labelled pages, and use consistent naming like “Homepage / Desktop / Final”. Clear structure is part of the same discipline you apply to SEO and content best practices and techniques: organised inputs make the output usable for the next person.

Over-Designing Before Validating

The most common trap is polishing pixel-perfect screens before anyone has confirmed the idea works. You add shadows, gradients, and precise spacing to a flow that the client may scrap entirely.

I always encourage beginners to sketch a low-fidelity prototype first, click through it, and share it early for feedback. It feels less impressive, but it saves days of rework when the concept changes.

The fix is to prototype in greyscale wireframes, validate the flow with real users or stakeholders, and only invest in visual detail once the structure is approved. Treat your first version as a conversation starter, not a final deliverable, and you will move faster with far less frustration.

The Future Of Figma And Design Work In Singapore

When people ask me what Figma is today, I have to be honest: it is no longer just a UI design tool. It has quietly grown into a wider suite that covers most of what a design team touches from start to finish.

One tool doing many jobs

Figma now stretches well beyond interface screens. FigJam handles whiteboarding and workshops, Figma Slides covers presentations, and Figma Sites lets you publish websites straight from your designs.

For a lean Singapore team, this consolidation matters more than it sounds. Fewer subscriptions and fewer handoffs between tools mean less friction and lower cost.

Picture a five-person startup in a co-working space at JTC LaunchPad. Before, they might have paid for one tool for wireframing, another for slide decks, a whiteboard app for brainstorming, and a separate no-code website builder.

Now that same team can run their sprint kickoff in FigJam, design the product in Figma, pitch investors with Figma Slides, and ship a landing page with Figma Sites. Four or five bills become one, and everyone is working in the same file structure.

AI as an assistant, not a replacement

The other big shift is AI woven into the design process. Figma’s AI-assisted features can speed up early wireframing, generate placeholder copy and images, and help you rename layers or search across files faster.

I use these features to skip the boring first draft, not to make the final call. AI can rough out three layout ideas in seconds, but deciding which one actually serves a Singapore user filling in a form on a crowded MRT still needs a human eye.

That is the balance I always stress to my learners. AI accelerates the busywork, but design judgement, empathy for the user, and business context remain firmly yours.

Riding Singapore’s digital push

All of this sits neatly inside Singapore’s broader direction. The Smart Nation agenda and IMDA’s digital economy plans keep pushing local businesses to build better digital products, and design is central to that.

Cost is often the sticking point for smaller firms, so it helps that Enterprise Singapore supports SMEs adopting digital tools and building capabilities through its grants and programmes. If you are weighing this up, it is worth first honestly assessing whether your organisation is ready for digital transformation before you commit budget and hours.

Figma is becoming the connective tissue for how small Singapore teams design, decide, and ship. The teams that learn it well now will be the ones moving fastest as its AI and product features keep expanding.

Conclusion

If you take one thing away from this article, let it be this: Figma is a browser-based, collaborative design and prototyping tool that has quietly become the industry default, and it earned that spot by removing the friction that used to slow everyone down.

No more emailing bloated files back and forth, no more worrying whether a teammate is on a Mac or a Windows machine, and no more confusion over which version is the latest one.

Singapore product teams, in-house marketers and freelance designers increasingly land in the same Figma file at the same time, leaving comments and iterating live instead of waiting days for feedback.

That is why it matters for your career here. Whether you sit in a startup in one-north, an agency in the CBD or a public sector team, being fluent in Figma is fast becoming a baseline expectation rather than a nice-to-have.

The good news is that Figma is genuinely beginner-friendly. You can open a blank canvas today and have a simple wireframe done by the end of the afternoon.

That said, structured, hands-on practice is what turns dabbling into real capability. Ready to move from dabbling to job-ready? What The Figma (WTF) is Equinet Academy’s SkillsFuture and SWDA-accredited, hands-on Figma course, built for exactly this jump. Eligible Singaporeans can offset the cost.

Whatever you decide, do not wait. Start your first small Figma project this week, a personal portfolio page or a landing page mockup, and let momentum do the rest.
