You have probably done this yourself. You open a food delivery app on a Friday night, hungry and impatient, and something just feels off. The menu takes ages to load, the checkout button hides below the fold, and you cannot tell whether your payment went through. So you close the app and order somewhere else.
Or maybe it was your bank’s mobile login that got you. The buttons looked polished and modern, yet you still could not figure out how to reset your password without three failed attempts and a phone call to the hotline.
Here is the question I want you to sit with: was that frustration a UI problem or a UX problem?
Most people cannot answer that cleanly, and that is completely understandable. In my years working with product teams and training career switchers here in Singapore, I have watched aspiring designers, product managers, and small business owners use the terms ui vs ux interchangeably.
The consequence is real. I have seen founders hire a visual designer when they actually needed someone to fix a broken user journey, then wonder why their app still bleeds users. Getting these two disciplines mixed up costs time, money, and morale.
This guide clears up the confusion once and for all, with concrete examples you can picture and apply to your own work.
Let us start by unpacking what UX really means, because that is where most of the confusion begins.
If you have ever used UI vs UX interchangeably in a meeting and seen someone flinch, you are not alone. The two terms get muddled constantly, partly because they overlap and partly because job ads throw them together as “UI/UX Designer” as if they were one thing.
Let me clear this up with a picture you know well: an MRT station like Jurong East.
Your user experience is the whole journey. It is whether you can find the right platform, tap in with your card, change lines without getting lost, and reach Raffles Place calmly instead of frazzled.
The user interface is the stuff you actually see and touch along the way. It is the coloured line indicators, the signage arrows, the ticket machine buttons, and the layout of the network map on the wall.
UX is the journey. UI is the touchpoints that make that journey possible.
User experience is about the end-to-end journey and how a person feels at every step of it.
Think about the SingPass app. UX covers the entire flow: opening the app, scanning your face, retrieving a document, and using it to log in to another government service without hitting a dead end.
Good UX means that flow feels effortless and you trust it. Bad UX means you get stuck, tap the wrong thing, or abandon the task and go queue at a physical counter instead.
Notice that none of this is about how pretty the app looks. UX asks harder questions: is the task easy to complete, does the order of steps make sense, and does the user leave feeling confident or confused?
That emotional response matters. If DBS digibank makes you anxious every time you transfer money because you are unsure the payment went through, that is a UX problem, no matter how polished the screen is.
The user interface is the visual and interactive layer sitting on top of that journey.
UI is concerned with the concrete design details you interact with directly:
On DBS digibank, the UI is the teal branding, the big confirm buttons, and the way a successful transfer shows a green tick.
Here is the key relationship to remember: UI is a subset of UX. A beautiful interface cannot rescue a confusing journey, but a clumsy interface can easily wreck an otherwise smart one.
So when we design well, we treat UI as one important part serving the larger goal of a smooth, reassuring experience.
When people ask me about UI vs UX, I always start with the same picture: imagine a checkout flow on a Singapore e-commerce site. That single screen tells you everything about how these two disciplines diverge.
Let me walk you through where they split, because getting this clear saves teams from a lot of finger-pointing later.
UX design is about the whole journey. It answers the question, “Can the user actually get what they came for?”
UI design is about the interface itself. It answers, “Is what they see clear, consistent, and pleasant to use?”
Those different purposes produce different deliverables. A UX designer hands over user flows, wireframes, journey maps, and research findings. A UI designer hands over high-fidelity mockups, colour palettes, typography systems, and component libraries.
In practice, both roles often live inside the same software, so the overlap confuses newcomers. A UX designer might spend the morning in Figma sketching flows, then move to a tool like Maze or Hotjar to test them and watch where users drop off.
A UI designer works in Figma too, but their focus is pixel spacing, contrast ratios, and whether the “Pay Now” button reads the same on a mobile screen as it does on desktop.
Here is the part that matters most for a business owner. UX and UI are measured by completely different things.
Picture a local retailer’s Shopee-style store with a gorgeous checkout page. The gradients are beautiful, the buttons are crisp, the UI is flawless.
But the UX is broken. The flow forces a shopper to create an account before seeing shipping costs, then hides the promo code field, then loops back to a page they already filled in.
That store will still lose the sale. A beautiful UI cannot rescue a journey that frustrates people, which is exactly why these two must work together rather than compete.
If you want to see how these outcomes connect to the wider funnel, it helps to understand the important digital marketing metrics to prioritise for your business, because a drop-off in checkout completion shows up in both your UX data and your conversion reports.
There is one Singapore-specific angle I always flag. Under the PDPA, consent for collecting personal data must be unambiguous, and both disciplines carry part of that responsibility.
The UX designer decides where and how the consent request appears in the flow, so it feels honest rather than sneaky. The UI designer makes sure the consent text is legible, not buried in tiny grey type a shopper cannot read.
Get one right and the other wrong, and you have a compliance gap. That is the clearest proof that UI and UX are complementary partners, not rivals.
Here is the truth I keep coming back to after years of watching products launch: UX and UI only create value when they move as one. The whole debate around ui vs ux misses the point if you treat them as rivals rather than partners.
Let me walk you through a scenario you have probably encountered yourself. Imagine a local F&B chain, say a bak kut teh restaurant with three outlets, deciding to roll out self-order kiosks to cut queues during the lunch rush.
The success of that kiosk depends on UX and UI working in lockstep, not on one saving the other.
The UX work starts long before anyone touches a colour palette. I would sit inside that restaurant during peak hours and watch how customers actually behave.
Do they know their order before they reach the kiosk? Do older uncles and aunties struggle with touchscreens? Do families want to split into separate orders?
From those observations, the UX designer maps the flow. Choose category, select dish, customise spice level, add to cart, pay by PayNow or card, collect a queue number.
Then this flow becomes wireframes: grey boxes and labels showing where each step sits and how a person moves from hungry to seated. No pretty visuals yet, just structure and logic.
Once the flow is agreed, the UI designer takes over the visual layer. This is where the kiosk gets the restaurant’s brand colours, large legible fonts, appetising dish photos, and buttons big enough for a thumb in a hurry.
The UI designer decides that the pay button is a warm, unmissable colour, that error messages appear in plain English, and that the confirmation screen feels reassuring rather than cold.
Crucially, they do not work in a silo. If the UI designer notices the wireframe crams too many options onto one screen, they feed that back and the two iterate together until the layout both looks good and reads clearly.
This same collaborative rhythm underpins good landing page design principles that convert, where structure and visual polish have to reinforce each other.
I have seen gorgeous apps that nobody can navigate. A clinic booking system with a stunning interface but a checkout flow so confusing that patients abandon it and just phone the front desk instead.
That is misalignment in action. Beautiful UI wrapped around broken UX is like a spotless restaurant with a menu written in a language no one reads.
A product succeeds only when the flow makes sense, and the surface makes it a pleasure to use.
This matters more than ever in Singapore. With IMDA actively pushing digitalisation among SMEs, that F&B chain is competing against neighbours who are also going digital, so a kiosk that frustrates customers is not just a design flaw; it is a lost sale to the shop next door.
Let me walk you through what a UX designer actually does, because the reality often surprises people who imagine designers pushing pixels around in Figma all day.
The truth is that most of the work happens long before anyone opens a design tool. A UX designer’s day is research-driven, not code-driven.
Picture a designer working on a payments team at a Singapore fintech or a GovTech product like a public sector app. Their morning might start with reviewing support tickets to understand where users get stuck.
By mid-morning, they could be running a moderated usability test on a new payments flow. That means sitting with a real user, asking them to complete a transaction, and watching quietly as they hesitate, tap the wrong button, or misread a confirmation screen.
This kind of testing is gold. When a user pauses before entering their OTP because they are not sure the amount is correct, that hesitation tells you exactly where the interface is failing them.
Alongside testing, a UX designer spends a lot of time on:
After gathering all that raw research, the afternoon often turns to synthesis. This is where the designer clusters observations, spots patterns, and turns messy notes into clear insights the team can act on.
They then share those findings with product managers, engineers, and business stakeholders, usually in a working session rather than a formal presentation. A designer at a payments team might argue, with evidence, that the confirmation screen needs a clearer breakdown of fees before the checkout conversion improves.
Notice what is missing from all of this: writing code. A UX designer needs to understand what is technically feasible, but they do not build the product themselves. That is a common misconception worth clearing up early.
This is also why UX is one of the more accessible tech roles for career switchers in Singapore.
If you have worked in marketing, you already understand audience needs and messaging.
If you come from operations or customer service, you have spent years hearing exactly where processes and products fail people. Those instincts transfer directly into research and journey mapping.
That is why many Singaporeans use their SkillsFuture Credit to reskill into UX, bridging real-world empathy and problem-solving into a structured design practice.
When people debate UI vs UX, they often picture a UI designer simply “making things pretty”. Having sat next to plenty of them, I can tell you the day looks very different.
Imagine you are the UI designer at a Singapore bank, responsible for keeping the visual system consistent across both the web portal and the mobile app.
Your morning might start with a request from the product team to add a new “fund transfer” flow. You do not start from a blank canvas. You start from the design system.
A design system is your source of truth. It holds the colour tokens, typography scale, spacing rules, and reusable components that keep every screen feeling like it belongs to the same bank.
In Figma, you spend a big chunk of your day building and refining these components: primary buttons, form fields, cards, error states, and the grid that holds them together.
The goal is that when a developer builds the transfer screen next week, the button they use is the same button already approved across every other flow. That consistency is what makes a banking app feel trustworthy rather than stitched together.
You also make deliberate choices about colour palette and type. A navy for authority, a clear accent colour for calls to action, and a readable typeface that works at small sizes on a crowded phone screen.
Just as writers distinguish copywriting versus content writing and the key differences, UI designers separate the craft of the visual layer from the strategy that sits beneath it. Both matter, but they are not the same job.
Here is where UI work gets serious, especially for public-facing services in Singapore.
If you were designing for a government digital service, your layouts would need to meet WCAG accessibility guidelines. That means checking colour contrast ratios so text is legible for users with low vision, ensuring interactive elements can be reached by keyboard, and adding proper labels for screen readers.
You test responsive layouts too, so the same screen behaves well on a desktop monitor, a tablet, and a commuter’s phone on the MRT.
Late in the day, you prepare the developer handoff: annotated Figma files, spacing specs, and links to the components so nothing gets guessed.
But none of this happens in a vacuum. Your UI decisions rest entirely on the UX foundation handed to you: the user flows, wireframes, and research that told you a “fund transfer” screen was needed in the first place. The UX defines the problem; your UI makes the solution feel effortless.
Here is where the tidy definitions start to blur. When I first tried to sort every skill into a neat UX box or a UI box, I kept running into ones that refused to sit still.
Interaction design, prototyping, and wireframing are where UX and UI genuinely overlap. These are not purely research tasks, and they are not purely visual tasks either.
Think about wireframing. When you sketch a checkout flow for a local e-commerce brand, you are making UX decisions about steps and logic, but you are also making early UI decisions about layout and hierarchy.
Prototyping in a tool like Figma sits in the same grey zone. You are testing a user journey (UX) while polishing button states, spacing, and motion (UI) in the same file.
Scroll through any job board here, and you will notice how often the title reads “UX/UI Designer” rather than one or the other. This is not laziness.
In many Singapore SMEs and early-stage startups, budgets are tight, and headcount is lean, so one designer is expected to run user interviews on Monday and ship pixel-perfect screens by Friday. A fintech startup at Block 71 rarely has the luxury of a separate researcher and a separate visual designer.
Larger product teams, say at a bank’s digital arm or an established platform, are more likely to split the roles because scale justifies specialists.
So should you spread wide or go deep? The honest answer depends on where you want to work.
Being a generalist makes you flexible and instantly useful to smaller teams. The trade-off is that you may never go as deep as a dedicated researcher or a systems-focused UI designer, which can matter when you apply to bigger firms.
The portfolio is what closes the gap between these labels. In Singapore’s product sector, the hiring managers I have spoken to want to see both a clear research process and genuine visual polish in the same case study.
They want the messy middle: your assumptions, your user findings, the wireframes, and then the refined final screens.
One real challenge is portfolio saturation. So many candidates present the same food delivery redesign; yours needs a specific, believable problem and a decision trail that proves you can actually think, not just decorate.
When I first started reviewing candidate portfolios, I could often tell whether someone leaned UX or UI just by the tools they mentioned. The two disciplines share some overlap, but their tool stacks tell different stories.
Understanding this split helps you decide where to focus your learning, so let me walk you through what a working team in Singapore actually uses.
UX work lives and dies by evidence, so the tools are built around gathering and making sense of what users actually do.
For unmoderated usability tests and quick surveys, teams reach for Maze, which lets you run prototype tests and capture task success rates without booking a single call.
To keep interview notes, recordings, and findings organised, Dovetail is a common choice because it tags qualitative data so patterns surface faster.
For workshops and journey mapping, Miro is almost universal. I have watched a small in-house team at a Singapore SaaS company map an entire onboarding flow on a Miro board during a single afternoon session, then use it to align product, marketing, and support.
User interview platforms round this out, helping you recruit and schedule real participants rather than relying on office colleagues who already know your product too well.
Once the research points the way, UI designers turn insights into interfaces, and here the landscape has consolidated dramatically.
Figma has become the dominant tool taught in most Singapore courses, and for good reason: it handles design, prototyping, and real-time collaboration in the browser, so an agency designer in Tanjong Pagar can co-edit a file with a client stakeholder anywhere.
Adobe XD still appears in some workflows, and design system managers help larger teams keep buttons, colours, and spacing consistent across products.
A typical agency stack in Singapore might look like this:
The good news is that most SkillsFuture and SSG accredited programmes cover these tools hands-on, so you practise on real briefs rather than just watching demos. If you want a broader sense of how design tools sit alongside marketing platforms, this guide to digital marketing tools, software and platforms gives useful context.
So which tool should you learn first? If you lean UI, start with Figma, because it is the industry standard and everything else builds on it.
If you lean UX, begin with Miro for mapping and Maze for testing, then pick up Figma once you need to hand designs over to developers or clients.
Once you understand the ui vs ux distinction, the next practical question is what a career in either track actually looks like here in Singapore. The good news is that both paths are in demand, and the two roles often blur into hybrid product design positions as you gain seniority.
I have watched people from surprising backgrounds make this switch. A former operations executive at a logistics firm, for instance, tends to bring a strong instinct for process and edge cases, which translates well into UX research and flows.
Most people enter as a junior UX or UI designer, usually on a smaller product team, an agency, or an in-house team at a bank, a government agency, or a startup.
At the junior level, you are executing wireframes, running basic usability tests, or building UI components in Figma under supervision. Salaries at this stage sit in a modest band, comparable to other entry-level tech roles.
As you move to a mid or senior designer, you own whole features, mentor juniors, and speak directly to stakeholders. This is where compensation climbs meaningfully, especially at fintechs like the local banks’ digital arms or established scale-ups.
From there, two common routes open up:
I always tell career switchers the same thing: in Singapore’s competitive market, your portfolio of real projects, not your certificates, is what actually gets you hired. Hiring managers here skim credentials, but they study your case studies.
If you are a marketer or operations professional eyeing a junior UX role, you do not have to fund the transition entirely out of pocket.
Every Singaporean can tap SkillsFuture Credit to offset the cost of SSG-supported design programmes, and many industry-relevant courses are eligible for further subsidy. That lowers the barrier considerably.
For mid-career switchers specifically, Workforce Singapore runs programmes designed to support transitions into growth sectors, sometimes with structured placement or attachment components. These are worth checking against your eligibility before you commit.
Here is a realistic scenario. Say you are a marketing executive who has spent years briefing designers and running campaigns. You already understand user intent; if you have ever studied what a digital marketing agency actually does, you know how audience insight drives outcomes.
You use SkillsFuture Credit to fund a structured UX and UI course, then spend evenings rebuilding two real problems into polished case studies. Within months, you have a portfolio that shows research, wireframes, and a final UI, which is exactly what a hiring panel wants to see.
That combination of funded reskilling and genuine project work is, in my experience, the most reliable way to land a first junior role.
By now you understand the ui vs ux distinction, but the harder question is which one suits you. Let me give you a practical way to sort this out rather than a vague “follow your passion” answer.
Start with an honest self-assessment of how you naturally solve problems.
If you enjoy asking why, interviewing people, spotting patterns in behaviour, and mapping out flows before touching a single screen, you lean towards UX. These are the people who get energised by a research report, not drained by it.
If you notice bad kerning on a hawker centre signboard, care deeply about colour and spacing, and love making things feel polished, you lean towards UI. Your instinct is visual, and that is a genuine strength, not a lesser one.
Most people are not purely one or the other, which is why a combined path exists. In smaller Singapore teams, especially at startups and SMEs, one person often owns both, so hybrid skills make you more hireable here than in a large enterprise with specialised roles.
Your background changes the shortest route in. I see three common starting points among learners here.
Here is the part most people skip. Do not decide from a hypothetical brief in a course exercise.
Pick a small real problem you can see and touch. Redesign the booking flow for a neighbourhood clinic, or improve a small F&B business’s ordering page. Talk to actual users, even three or four friends, and watch where they get stuck.
A defensible portfolio comes from real decisions on real constraints, not polished mockups of fake apps. Hiring managers can tell the difference in minutes.
You can absolutely learn this alone, but structured, mentored programmes shorten the path considerably because you get feedback on your thinking, not just your visuals, and you reach a hiring-ready portfolio faster.
UX and UI are distinct disciplines, but they only create value when they work in harmony.
Think back to the core distinction. UX is about how a product works: the research, the user flows, the logic that makes a checkout or a booking journey feel effortless. UI is about how it looks and feels: the typography, the colour, the spacing, the tap targets that make that flow visually clear and delightful to use.
I have seen plenty of Singapore products fail on one side of this. A government e-service can have a beautiful interface and still frustrate you because the underlying journey was never mapped properly. Likewise, a logistics start-up can have brilliant UX thinking buried under an interface that looks unfinished and untrustworthy.
Great products need both, and the good news is that you do not have to be equally strong in each to build a career. Some of us gravitate towards research, empathy, and problem framing. Others come alive with visual craft and design systems. The right path depends on your strengths, so be honest about what genuinely energises you.
Whatever you choose, resist the temptation to collect certificates for their own sake. What actually gets you hired here is a real, defensible portfolio: two or three case studies where you can walk a hiring manager through your decisions on a genuine problem.
That is exactly why I point beginners towards the WSQ User Experience & User Interface (UX UI) Design Essentials Course at Equinet Academy, a structured, mentored path that takes you from your first user interview to a hiring-ready portfolio built on real projects.
It is SkillsFuture-eligible too, so if you are ready to move from reading about UI vs UX to actually practising both, this is the logical next step.
