You’ve paid an agency for six months. The reports were tidy, the dashboards were colourful, and your rankings barely moved.
I hear some version of this story constantly, and it follows the same shape almost every time. A business signs a retainer, gets handed to a junior account manager, and receives a monthly PDF describing activity instead of outcomes.
That’s why I think the search for an SEO consultant in Singapore is a genuinely different buying journey from the search for an agency. A consultant is a person, not a department. You know whose judgement you’re buying, and you can hold that person accountable when the numbers stall.
Singapore is effectively saturated online, which raises the stakes on organic visibility. DataReportal Digital 2026: Singapore counted 5.78 million internet users at the end of 2025, putting online penetration at 98.4% of the population, alongside 5.33 million social media identities. When almost everyone in your market is searchable, and search engines remain the leading channel for brand discovery, the cost of being invisible on page one is no longer theoretical.
The competitive reality is sharper than the headline numbers suggest.
Singapore is a small, dense, English-first market with high commercial intent per search. That means fewer keywords, higher competition per keyword, and far less room for the volume-based tactics that work in larger markets.
A generic content strategy that would quietly succeed in Singapore often stalls here, because ten well-funded competitors are chasing the same 200 monthly searches.
There is a second shift that has caught many businesses off guard.
AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini now sit between your customer and your website. People increasingly get an answer without clicking, which means the brief for an SEO consultant has quietly expanded into citation visibility, not just ranking position.
If you want a primer on how those layers interact before you brief anyone, our guide to SEO, AEO and GEO for beginners breaks the three disciplines apart in plain English.
Singapore SEO is a multilingual problem disguised as an English problem. English dominates commercial search, but a meaningful share of consumer queries happen in Mandarin, and to a lesser extent Malay and Tamil. A consultant who never asks about your language mix has not understood your market.
If you only have two minutes, here is the summary.
The word “consultant” gets used loosely in Singapore, and that’s exactly why buyers get burned.
Here’s how I’d define it: an SEO consultant is a senior individual practitioner who advises on, and often executes, your search strategy as a named expert, rather than as part of a rotating account team. That distinction matters because it determines who’s actually thinking about your account.
That definition matters because it sets your expectations about who thinks.
Almost every disappointing engagement I’ve come across traces back to buying one of these while expecting another.
| Model | What you are buying | Typical Singapore price | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freelancer | Execution capacity for a defined task. You supply the strategy and the brief. | SGD 80 to 150 per hour for senior freelancers | You already have SEO leadership in-house and need hands to fill gaps |
| Consultant | Senior judgement, diagnosis and a prioritised roadmap. Execution optional. | Roughly SGD 200 to 500 per hour, or a scoped monthly retainer | You have a marketing team that can execute but no search strategist |
| Agency | A delivery system: technical, content, links, reporting, project management. | Commonly SGD 2,500 to 15,000 per month depending on scope | You have no internal SEO resource and want hands-off delivery |
Pay attention to the middle row. You don’t usually get a senior strategist at freelance rates. Their billable hours are limited, and the work is consultative, so the price reflects scarcity, not greed.
Vague scope is the single most common cause of a failed engagement I’ve seen. I’d insist on named artefacts, not a list of activities:
If a proposal promises guaranteed page-one rankings, or quotes a fixed number of keywords with no reference to search intent or commercial value, I’d treat that as a sales artefact rather than a strategy. Nobody controls Google. The consultants worth hiring commit to a process and a diagnostic standard, not a position on a results page.
Honesty helps more than salesmanship here, so I’ll say plainly where I think a consultant is the wrong purchase:
Before you book a single call, I’d run through this:
For each individual listed below, our content team, together with the public relations team, conducted an email interview covering their professional network, their perspective on the Singapore market, and how AI has influenced their work. Where a consultant operates within an agency, this has been noted explicitly, as it materially affects the nature of the engagement being offered.
Each profile below follows the same structure: who they are, what the public record shows, who they suit, and what to check before you commit.
Where a consultant sits inside an agency, that is stated plainly, because it changes what you are buying.
Manson Yau, Independent SEO Consultant, international and technical SEO for growth-stage businesses.
From the newsroom to the search results page. Manson began his career as a journalist, where he learned to research complex subjects, work out what people were really searching for, and communicate ideas clearly. As digital publishing grew in importance, he started helping businesses improve the visibility of their content, and that work expanded from content optimisation into technical SEO, international SEO, and wider search strategy.
He has been a full-time SEO consultant since 2018. Today he helps businesses build sustainable organic growth by combining data, content strategy, and technical SEO with a strong grasp of customer behaviour. His website is available at manson.space.
Most of Manson’s clients are SMEs, startups, and growth-stage businesses, though he also supports larger enterprises through agency partnerships. His experience spans B2B manufacturers, professional services firms, ecommerce brands, healthcare providers, fintech companies, and financial institutions. Many operate internationally, so localisation and international SEO sit at the centre of much of his work.
Manson points out that Singapore is small but highly international, and that many businesses treat SEO purely as local marketing. In doing so, they overlook overseas companies actively searching for suppliers and service providers here. He gives the example of an office interior design firm that receives enquiries from overseas businesses planning to set up a regional office in Singapore, opportunities that are easily missed with a local-only approach.
During the pandemic, Manson led the Asia-market SEO strategy for an international premium home appliance retailer. Within six months, organic-driven ecommerce sales doubled in Singapore and tripled in Taiwan.
Rather than stopping at product pages, he expanded the strategy to cover the full customer journey, from model research and installation to electricity requirements, usage, maintenance, and repairs, adapting the content to different customer concerns and technical standards in each market. His takeaway: keyword research reveals demand, but qualitative customer research is just as important for understanding concerns and supporting purchase decisions.
Manson sees AI Overviews and chat assistants as having reduced click-through rates for some informational searches, while making authority, structure, and brand credibility more important than ever. He now treats SEO as a multi-platform discipline spanning websites, YouTube, social media, structured data, and brand mentions, to become a source that both people and AI systems trust and recommend.
His advice for a business owner with no budget: set up free measurement tools such as Google Search Console, Google Analytics, Bing Webmaster Tools, and Microsoft Clarity, then combine that data with real insight from sales and support teams.
SEO in 2026 is about becoming a trusted source while adapting to an AI-driven search landscape.

Mei Ping Mak, Independent SEO consultant, brand-led SEO and AI search visibility for Singapore businesses.
A programmer’s route into search. Mei Ping came to SEO from a programming background, after learning digital marketing from super affiliate Ivan Ong. The technical concepts came easily, and once she started implementing them, she found she could rank low-volume search terms within a few months. That early success hooked her, and she began consulting for small and medium businesses in Singapore under an agency.
That was 2014, and she has been at it for twelve years since.
Mei Ping works mainly with local Singapore businesses across retail, aircon, and waterproofing, alongside regional companies that need operations support and lead generation. Client size ranges from one-person outfits to companies with more than 100 employees. Past and current clients include Juneberries Haven, Coolcity Aircon Service Enterprise, and Hand Global.
Her onboarding is deliberately structured. She opens with a call to pin down business goals, expectations, and what success actually looks like, then builds a workflow spreadsheet that lists every task with an owner, a timeline, an expected outcome, current status, and supporting documentation. The aim is for every stakeholder to see exactly where each stage sits and what it should deliver.
For Mei Ping, the biggest mistake local businesses make is failing to define their brand position, then carrying an inconsistent brand narrative across their channels. The result is incoherent storytelling, which she expects to become a real liability as AI chatbots lean heavily on trust and brand authority.
She also stresses that ranking in Singapore is its own discipline. Local search behaviour, spelling and language variations such as Singlish and British versus American spelling, and different browsing and shopping habits all shift what works. In her view, Singapore rewards depth and trust signals because buyers research heavily before purchase, the US rewards intent-segmentation across a fragmented market, and Australia rewards price-transparency and comparison content driven by value-consciousness.
One standout is a local waste oil management company. Taking a cue from David Ogilvy’s Schweppes campaign, Mei Ping positioned the company around its NEA licence. Every waste oil company holds that licence, but none of the competitors were communicating it, even though improper disposal can leave customers facing fines or blacklisting. Making the licence explicit removed a major source of friction and built immediate trust.
From that position, she built a website and ranked it for terms like “waste oil collector”, “waste oil company”, and “waste oil disposal”. The quality leads that followed helped grow the business from a single person to more than 20 staff, and it was eventually sold to a China-based company.
Mei Ping has treated the shift since ChatGPT’s 2022 launch as something to study directly. She runs her own experiments to understand how AI chat assistants cite and mention brands, how they evolve, and how end-users actually think when they use them. That work reinforces her core belief that a strong brand, built largely through off-page strategy, is what earns citations and mentions in an AI-driven landscape.
Her advice for a business owner with no budget this week: set up a Google Business Profile and Bing Places for Business, then ask customers for reviews. It costs nothing, and for a business with existing trust signals, it is a simple way to get cited and mentioned by AI assistants.
SEO in 2026 is about adapting to the new search landscape.

Amlan Maiti, Founder and Director, Digital Piloto, SEO and AI-powered search optimisation for growth-focused brands.
Digital Piloto Pvt. Ltd. is a Google Partner digital marketing agency specialising in SEO, AI-powered search optimisation, performance marketing, and web solutions. With over a decade of experience, he has helped businesses across multiple industries improve their online visibility, generate qualified leads, and build sustainable digital growth. His current focus is on helping brands adapt to the future of search through AI SEO, technical excellence, and content authority.
Amlan’s agency works with startups, SMEs, and established businesses across healthcare, education, real estate, hospitality, professional services, manufacturing, ecommerce, and technology. Most of his clients invest consistently over the long term rather than expecting overnight rankings.
His onboarding runs on a structured 30-day roadmap. Week one covers a business discovery session, goal setting, competitor analysis, and access to analytics tools. Week two moves to a technical audit, performance review, crawlability analysis, and an AI visibility assessment. Week three handles intent-based keyword research, content gap analysis, internal linking, and a local SEO review where relevant. Week four closes with an SEO roadmap presentation, priority fixes, content planning, and KPI dashboard setup. The philosophy is to build a strong foundation before scaling content and authority.
For Amlan, the biggest mistake is treating SEO as a checklist rather than a growth strategy, chasing rankings for a handful of keywords while ignoring search intent, content quality, technical health, conversion, brand authority, and user experience.
He describes Singapore as a competitive and digitally mature market where users hold high expectations for quality, speed, and trust. In that setting, local relevance, Google Business Profile optimisation, brand authority, and strong content tend to matter more than simply publishing more pages. The fundamentals are the same as elsewhere, in his view, but execution has to be more precise.
Amlan points to a client that started with very limited organic visibility. Within roughly ten months, the work delivered meaningful growth in qualified organic traffic, multiple high-intent keywords ranking on page one, stronger lead generation from search, and improved technical health and engagement. He is careful to frame success in business terms, measuring leads, enquiries, and revenue rather than rankings alone.
Amlan now optimises for AI-generated experiences alongside traditional results, working across entity optimisation, structured data, topical authority, question-focused content, and clear information architecture. His agency also uses in-house AI indexing and SEO tools to improve how content is discovered and surfaced across both search engines and AI platforms. He frames the shift as a move towards Search Everywhere Optimisation, where brands need visibility across search engines and AI systems alike.
On hiring, he advises businesses to look for a consultant who understands business goals, explains strategy clearly, reports transparently, and adapts to algorithm and AI changes. His red flags: guaranteed number-one rankings, thousands of backlinks in a short window, secret techniques, thin reporting, and one-size-fits-all strategies.
His no-budget advice for this week: create genuinely helpful content that answers customers’ most common questions, then tidy up titles and meta descriptions, refresh outdated content, strengthen internal linking, improve the Google Business Profile, and ask satisfied customers for genuine reviews.
SEO in 2026 is about building trust, demonstrating expertise, and becoming the most helpful answer, whether users find you through Google Search, AI Overviews, or conversational AI assistants.

Yi Jie Law is the Founder and Director of Leading Solution Pte Ltd, focused on SEO and AI search for Singapore SMEs.
Marketing training, then a decade of digital marketing and search. Yi Jie studied marketing at NTU and was pulled in by the puzzle side of it, experimenting with the obscure ranking factors that decide who wins a search result. Leading Solution was founded in 2015, which makes it about eleven years of SEO consulting in Singapore. That whole time has gone into one discipline, digital marketing and search, with no drift into brand, events, or the full-service menu. The payoff of that focus, in Yi Jie’s words, is having watched every major algorithm shift land on real client accounts rather than reading about it afterwards.
The clients are almost entirely Singapore SMEs, ideally a business with a real service to sell, a genuine local reputation, and a website that is not pulling its weight. By industry, it clusters around home improvement and interior design, professional services, education and tuition, healthcare, travel, IT services, and ecommerce. Home improvement is where the work runs deepest, since it is a category where customers research for weeks before they call anyone, which is exactly the behaviour SEO is built for.
Onboarding is tightly sequenced. Week one is access and a structured questionnaire, covering what the client actually sells, margin by service, and which enquiries they want more and fewer of. Weeks one and two bring a full technical audit alongside a content inventory and a Search Console decay analysis of pages that quietly stopped performing.
Weeks two and three cover competitor and keyword mapping, with the output being a keyword map built on one page, one job. Weeks three and four deliver a prioritised roadmap sequenced by impact over effort, with quick technical and title fixes usually shipping inside the first month. By day 30, the client has a written diagnosis, a ranked roadmap, and visible technical movement, but not yet rankings, a point made upfront.
The biggest local mistake, in Yi Jie’s view, is publishing more instead of fixing what already exists. Businesses accumulate eighty articles where perhaps fifteen have ever earned a click, several competing for the same term, leaving Google to guess which page is the real answer. Yi Jie has run consolidations cutting a blog from eighty-plus posts down to around twenty, merging the good material and removing the rest, and seen organic performance improve, because a small number of authoritative pages beats a large number of thin ones. That matters more now that AI systems pull one answer rather than ten links.
On what makes Singapore distinct, the point is that search volumes are tiny and it does not matter. A term doing 200 searches a month here can be worth more than one doing 20,000 in the US, because those 200 are all in-market, local, and reachable. Geography barely helps when the whole country is one city competing in the same radius, so the win comes from relevance, reviews, and reputation rather than proximity.
Aggregators and directories own the top of the highest-intent results more than they do in larger markets, so part of the job is deciding where to compete directly and where to get listed on whatever is already winning. The competitive set is small but sharp, one of forty rather than one of ten thousand.
Swiss Interior, an interior design firm specialising in HDB and condo interiors, came in as a brand-new startup with no website, no rankings, and no domain history. The site was built from scratch and optimised from day one rather than retrofitted, a meaningfully easier starting position. The category is expensive to buy into, with renovation clicks running into double digits on Google Ads and firms routinely spending tens of thousands a month on leads, so the goal was to make paid traffic optional.
Rather than chasing generic “interior design Singapore”, the strategy targeted the terms people actually search when planning a renovation, primarily design styles such as Scandinavian, minimalist, and modern, alongside HDB and condominium design.
Movement showed within the first quarter, and within two years the firm was drawing 9,500 visitors a month and saving more than $10,000 in monthly ad budget. The pride is less about the percentage and more about the fact that a startup with no budget for a bidding war ended up owning the searches that matter in its niche.
For Yi Jie, AI has changed what gets measured more than what gets done. With AI Mode live in Singapore since August 2025 and later merged with AI Overviews, clients are often no longer competing for a click but to be the source the answer is built from. So the work now tracks citations, not just rankings, checking whether a client gets named across Google, ChatGPT, and Perplexity and which pages get pulled. Structure matters more than before, meaning clean schema, direct answers near the top, and specific numbers and dates rather than vague claims.
The pages that win are the ones carrying information nobody else has: real prices, real processes, real constraints, since rewritten generic advice is already in the model. The uncomfortable part is reporting, because traffic can flatten while visibility genuinely rises, and a business counting only sessions will conclude the SEO stopped working exactly when it started working differently.
On hiring, the advice is to look for someone who asks about your margins before your keywords, will show you a live client account rather than a screenshot, names the person doing the work, and will tell you which parts of your business SEO cannot fix. The red flags, in order: not owning your own analytics and ads accounts, guaranteed rankings, reporting that never reaches money, unwillingness to show where links came from, a price too low to contain real labour, and long lock-ins with no exit clause.
The no-budget advice for this week: run an SEO and AI SEO audit with a skilled consultant to plan keyword clusters properly, finish rather than merely claim the Google Business Profile, then personally ask five recent happy customers for a Google review by name with a direct link. After that, open Search Console and improve the existing pages ranking eighth to fifteenth, since lifting a page that is almost there beats writing a new one.
SEO in 2026 is about being the source, not the result. You are no longer competing for a click on page one; you are competing to be the thing the answer is made of.

Chris Puan, Chief Marketer and Corporate Trainer, AI-aware SEO and on-site fundamentals for Singapore SMEs, freelance SEO specialist and freelance digital marketer.
From in-house trainer to SEO consultant. Chris came into digital marketing while working at Outbrain Japan as their in-house trainer, and has been practising SEO in Singapore since 2022. He works as a Chief Marketer and Corporate Trainer, combining hands-on consulting with training.
Most of Chris’s clients are local Singapore SMEs with headcounts under 30, alongside international clients in Thailand and Australia.
His onboarding starts with a call to iron out the details of the project, specifically which parts of SEO the client needs him to handle, the keywords they hope to rank for, and any in-house team members he will be working with. His priority is getting on-site SEO in order, making sure the meta titles, descriptions, and H1s all carry the keywords the client wants. Content refinement and updates come after the first 30 days, once those basics are confirmed.
For Chris, the biggest mistake, especially now that AI is in the picture, is assuming content creation can be offloaded entirely. He points to data points circulating on LinkedIn showing that mass-produced AI content performs poorly beyond the short term, including one experiment where 1,000 AI-made articles saw a catastrophic traffic drop after a single week.
On what makes Singapore distinct, he notes that geotargeting is not as critical here as it is in larger markets. In Australia, working with Melbourne car workshops as B2B targets, the strategy had to be geared around the city and its surroundings, and the same applied in Japan with a focus on Tokyo and later Fukuoka. In a single-city market like Singapore, that geographic layer matters far less.
A local shoe boutique came to Chris for a two-month tune-up project. They were already doing well on local SEO, but the SERP results improved after the work. Going in to check and optimise all their existing content, he helped them rank on page one for more short-tailed keywords, with long-tailed keywords across their shoe categories consistently hovering between rank 4 and 10. What pleased him was that a short-term, one-off tune-up delivered tangible benefits for the business.
Chris sees E-E-A-T as more important than ever, particularly the first E, experience, which is part of why platforms like Reddit have grown in marketing value. AI tools have delivered real productivity gains in his work, though the final application, in his view, still needs a human in the loop.
On hiring, his main red flag is a consultant who overpromises on rankings and timeframes. He also suggests checking whether they declare their AI usage. There is nothing wrong with AI content in itself, and Google has said AI usage is acceptable where applied in a relevant way, but it should not be a copy-and-paste job.
His no-budget advice for this week: check your key pages, especially the conversion-focused ones, and make sure the keywords you want are in the meta title, description, and H1. Free tools like Detailed SEO are easy to install and use.
SEO in 2026 is really about careful application of AI in content creation, with an eye on AEO but still focusing on the basics like E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authority, Trust).

Nigel Seah, is a freelance SEO and GEO consultant and Founder of Arvor Digital, a digital marketing agency that specialises in SEO and GEO.
A Broken-Down Bus and a Digital Nomad Dream
Curiosity and a broken-down bus shaped Nigel’s route into SEO.
His career was driven by two impulses: a desire to become a digital nomad and a growing curiosity about search. While on an overseas exchange and internship in São Paulo from mid-2018 to mid-2019, a bus breakdown left him stranded for more than three hours in Patagonia. Gazing out into the wilderness, he was struck by just how big the world was and resolved to see more of it as a digital nomad.
His first job was a COVID-19 traineeship as a content executive at local early-stage startup Novocall, where he discovered SEO while trying to understand why the company’s content was not performing. He taught himself the basics, watched rankings and traffic climb, and became drawn to a career he could pursue from anywhere.
He later joined First Page Digital Singapore, which he regarded as one of the country’s leading SEO agencies. Since leaving his role there as SEO Team Lead, he has worked independently as a consultant and now splits his year between travelling overseas and spending time back in Singapore.
Nigel’s clients span a wide range of industries, though many operate in the tech space.
His onboarding process begins with an in-depth conversation about the client’s offerings. He breaks each offering down into more granular categories and identifies the target buyer for each. From there, he develops buyer personas, maps out a roadmap for the engagement, sets up analytics and performance tracking, and begins the foundational SEO work.
This includes developing the content SEO strategy and mapping keywords to different stages of the buyer journey.
Why Cheap SEO Can Be Expensive
For Nigel, there is no single SEO mistake that stands above the rest. More broadly, however, he believes one of the biggest mistakes local businesses make is being too cheap.
Quality backlinks are called quality backlinks for a reason, and experts who have spent years honing their craft do not tend to lowball themselves.
He is equally wary of businesses firing their SEO teams or agencies to cut costs and replacing them with AI. As he puts it, “a tool is only as good as the person using it,” and handing ChatGPT to someone without years of SEO experience and expecting them to produce a solid strategy is, in his words, naive.
If Singapore businesses want quality SEO, he argues, they need to be willing to pay for it.
SEO Changes From Market to Market
When it comes to how rankings differ across markets, Nigel considers the US one of the most competitive arenas, given the number of major industry players operating there. Geography also shapes international SEO strategy, from hreflang implementation to the localisation of content for different audiences.
Building Organic Visibility for GoDaddy Across Asia
When GoDaddy was looking to build awareness across Asian markets, Nigel was tasked with developing topics that could serve several goals at once: rank on page one of Google, earn citations in Google’s AI Overviews, and promote GoDaddy’s offerings.
The resulting articles covered topics such as how to register and start a business in Pakistan, how much a website costs in Malaysia, how much it costs to build a website in Singapore, and the best small business ideas in Karachi.
These pieces were able to perform very well in the target markets. For example, the piece on web design costs in Malaysia ranked number one for “website development cost malaysia” and was even cited in AI Overviews.
Traffic Is No Longer the Only Measure of SEO Success
Nigel notes that Google’s AI Overviews have significantly reduced clicks to client websites, particularly for informational queries. This has prompted worried questions from clients about whether blog content is still worth the investment.
He answers that chasing vanity metrics alone will not deliver long-term success. SEO, and now GEO and AEO, should be evaluated on far more than rankings, clicks, and traffic alone.
Building a domain’s topical authority, or the depth and breadth with which a website demonstrates expertise in its niche, can strengthen its credibility with Google and help improve rankings for more commercially valuable keywords.
AI Makes SEO Faster, but It Does Not Replace Expertise
When it comes to LLMs such as ChatGPT, Nigel has found that they make certain parts of his work significantly faster. This includes researching and drafting content outlines, and spotting errors in a page’s source code.
Even so, he maintains that AI cannot replace someone with years of experience. Everything he produces with the help of AI goes through several rounds of proofreading and editing before it reaches a client.
What to Look for When Hiring an SEO
When hiring an SEO, Nigel strongly advises against choosing someone whose experience is limited to big brands. Highly authoritative brand domains can often perform well with relatively basic SEO work. Smaller brands and newer domains are much harder to grow and typically demand far more experimentation, trial and error, and A/B testing.
That could mean refreshing content, gathering proprietary qualitative data through customer interviews, rearranging content modules, or adjusting backlink anchor text. In his view, one of the best ways to spot a good SEO is to look at how willing they are to experiment in pursuit of better results for their clients.
His No-Budget SEO Advice
His no-budget advice for this week is simple: read up on what makes a piece of content genuinely helpful to both users and search engines, then take it from there.
SEO in 2026 is really about strengthening your SEO foundations, creating hyper-granular content to target long-tail queries, avoiding scammy practices, and not being a cheapskate.
Nigel Seah
Edwin Lau is an SEO consultant based in Singapore, working with SMEs and multinationals, and known for treating the first month of any engagement as much project management as search.
Curiosity and a Google prank. Edwin’s route into SEO started with the 2016 US election. Searching “idiot” on Google surfaced a photo of Donald Trump, and rather than dwelling on the politics, Edwin found himself wondering whether he could pull off the same trick with a friend’s face for a laugh. The mechanics behind it fascinated him, and he never looked back.
Edwin’s clients range from SMEs to multinationals, typically between 10 and 200-plus employees.
His first 30 days follow a deliberate sequence. Week one is a technical and competitor audit, with keyword mapping tied to the pages that actually drive revenue rather than vanity terms. Week two produces a strategy document setting out what’s being targeted, why, and what “done” looks like in 90 days. Weeks three and four are when content and technical fixes go live, and when Edwin starts chasing the client for approvals, assets, and access. He calls rather than emails, on the view that most SEO stalls not because the strategy is wrong but because clients sit on sign-off for weeks. In month one, he says, the work is as much about moving a project along as it is about search itself.
Edwin points to two recurring mistakes among local businesses. The first is underinvesting: a site needs to reach a critical mass of domain authority and content before Google extends its trust, and many businesses never clear that bar, leaving them ranking only for low-volume vanity keywords. The second is feast-and-famine budgeting, spending freely in good times and cutting in bad, which he says rankings simply don’t survive.
On how the market differs, Edwin notes that Singapore is small, with fewer domains competing per keyword than in the US, so it’s often possible to outrank rivals on less content. The trade-off is limited local link opportunities, since there are only so many relevant SG-based sites to build from. To compensate, he leans on overseas digital PR and content-driven links to build authority, while still prioritising local citations and directories for geo-relevance.
Edwin points to two engagements. A healthcare client, already running paid ads, wanted SEO to complement them for stronger long-term ROI, with key services ranking on page one; over four months, monthly traffic doubled from 3,500 to 7,000. A crypto exchange client set out to build world-class trading education and rank both educational and “how to buy X” transactional keywords on page one; over two years, monthly non-branded organic traffic grew 67-fold, from 15,000 to one million.
Edwin has seen AI Overviews cut click volume to client sites, but the clicks that still land convert at a higher rate. He has also begun ranking inside the AI Overviews themselves, which has driven a spike in that segment, and on the tooling side he uses Claude Code to handle repetitive SEO processes.
On hiring, his biggest red flag is a consultant who guarantees a set number of page-one keywords, only for the list to turn out to be long-tail, low-volume, low-competition terms with no real demand: fifty ranked keywords are worthless if they bring five visitors a month between them. He advises always asking for the actual keyword list and search volumes before signing. He is equally wary of consultants who hide behind jargon rather than explain their process, and who never ask which pages or services actually make the business money.
Claim and fully complete your Google Business Profile, since most Singapore SMEs leave it half-filled and it is free ranking equity. Fix the title tags and meta descriptions on your ten highest-traffic pages, roughly five minutes each and usually ignored for years. And ask your last five happy clients for a Google review, because review velocity signals both ranking and conversion.
“SEO in 2026 is really about one thing: Being accurate and complete enough that whatever’s reading you, Google, an LLM, or the person, doesn’t need to look anywhere else.” – Edwin Lau

Best fit if you… |
Notable strength |
| Manson Yau | Sell internationally or run an ecommerce operation across multiple markets | Technical + international SEO, cross-market content strategy |
| Mei Ping Mak | Run a local SME and haven’t nailed your brand positioning | Brand-led SEO, off-page strategy for AI citations |
| Amlan Maiti | Want a structured, agency-run process rather than a solo operator | AI-search optimisation, structured 30-day roadmap |
| Yi Jie Law | Have an existing site full of underperforming content | Content consolidation, citation tracking |
| Chris Puan | Need a fast, focused on-site tune-up rather than a long engagement | On-site fundamentals, short-term projects |
| Nigel Seah | Want content engineered to both rank and get cited in AI Overviews, especially across Asian or international markets | GEO-led content strategy, topical authority, cross-market work |
None of these six is a wrong choice, but each suits a different situation. What I’d actually do is pick two names that match your situation from the table above, get on a call with each, and run through the questions I laid out earlier: ask about their live client accounts, how they measure success, and what they’d tell you SEO can’t fix for your business. The consultant who answers that last question honestly is usually the one worth hiring.
Six different consultants, six different specialities, but the same undercurrent runs through all of them: SEO in Singapore is no longer just about ranking; it’s about being the answer AI systems choose to cite.
Manson Yau treats brand credibility as infrastructure for a multi-platform world. Mei Ping Mak builds off-page trust that AI assistants can recognise and repeat. Amlan Maiti runs a structured process built around Search Everywhere Optimisation. Yi Jie Law tracks citations as closely as clicks, because traffic can flatten while visibility rises. Chris Puan keeps pulling the conversation back to fundamentals: meta titles, H1s, and E-E-A-T, arguing that no AI layer works without them in place first. And Nigel Seah builds content engineered to rank and earn citations in AI Overviews across markets, while insisting that quality SEO – from backlinks to expertise – is the last place a business should try to save money.
The thread connecting all six is that none of them treat AI as a shortcut. It’s a productivity tool sitting on top of judgement, not a replacement for it. Whichever consultant you choose, the questions to ask stay the same: what do they actually deliver, how do they measure success beyond rankings, and what will they tell you SEO can’t fix. Get clear answers to those, and you’re already ahead of most businesses buying SEO in this market.
If you’d rather build this capability in-house than keep outsourcing it on a call-by-call basis, that’s exactly the gap a structured, certified course is designed to close.
The WSQ SEO, AEO & GEO Course covers the same ground these consultants have. It covers on-site fundamentals, answer engine optimisation, and generative engine visibility, and is structured into a certified curriculum. It leads to the Certified SEO Specialist (CSEOS) 2.0, giving marketers and business owners a recognised credential instead of a patchwork of blog posts and trial and error.
