You have probably seen the term SkillsFuture Credit pop up in emails, LinkedIn posts, and course brochures for years now. Yet when I ask people how much credit they actually have sitting in their account, most give me a shrug or a guess.
I get it. Between the original $500 credited from January 2016, the various top-ups since, and the newer Mid-Career top-up introduced in 2024, it is genuinely hard to keep track of what you can spend and where.
There is also a quiet worry I hear often: “Doesn’t my credit expire soon?” So people either rush into a random course or, more commonly, do nothing at all and leave money on the table.
This guide clears all of that up. Whether you are a working professional eyeing a career switch or an SME owner wondering if your staff can train on a budget, I will walk you through exactly what you have and how to use it.
Let me clear up the confusion first, because I get asked this all the time.
SkillsFuture Credit is a national initiative that gives Singapore Citizens a pool of credit to offset the fees of approved skills courses. It is not cash, and you cannot withdraw it or spend it on anything outside of learning.
The SkillsFuture movement was announced in 2015, and the SkillsFuture Credit itself was credited to eligible Singaporeans from January 2016. It is driven by SWDA (the Skills and Workforce Development Agency), the statutory board formed from the 2026 merger of SkillsFuture Singapore and Workforce Singapore.
The movement is about lifelong learning. The idea is that skills you learned a decade ago will not carry you through the next decade, so the government wants Singaporeans to keep upgrading throughout their careers.
Your credit does not sit in some separate wallet. It lives inside the same MySkillsFuture account (and Skills Passport) that most Singaporeans already have, so there is nothing new to set up.
Here is the most common mistake I see: people assume the credit is spending money they can cash out. It is not.
The credit only reduces the fee of an eligible course. Think of it as a voucher tied to your learning account rather than a bank balance.
Picture a mid-career Singaporean who signs up for a SkillsFuture-funded WSQ course. The course might carry a headline fee, but WSQ funding already brings that down, and the learner can then apply their SkillsFuture Credit to shave off part of the remaining out-of-pocket amount.
So the two supports stack. Course subsidy first, then your credit against what is left. What you cannot do is claim the balance in cash if the course costs less than your available credit.
The reason is simple: Singapore’s economy is changing fast, and roles are being reshaped by technology.
Whole industries are being reshaped by digital tools, which is exactly why digital marketing transformation matters for Singapore organisations and for the individuals working inside them.
SkillsFuture Credit is the government putting a little money behind that message, nudging you to take that first course instead of waiting.
This reflects the scheme’s stated purpose. The original 2015 announcement described the credit as something that would “empower Singaporeans to take personal ownership of lifelong learning”, and stressed that “there is no need for Singaporeans to rush to use their SkillsFuture Credit” because it does not expire, per SkillsFuture Singapore.
It also sits within a wider upskilling ecosystem. Workforce Singapore (WSG) supports career transitions and job matching, while the IMDA runs programmes aimed at digital and tech skills for the workforce and businesses.
The point is that the credit is one piece of a connected system. Used well, it lowers the barrier to trying a new skill, and it works best when you treat it as a springboard rather than a one-off perk.
Before you get excited about signing up for a course, you need to know two things: whether you qualify, and how much you actually have to spend.
The short answer is that SkillsFuture Credit is for Singapore Citizens only. If you are a Permanent Resident or a foreigner working here on an Employment Pass, you are not eligible for this particular scheme, so it is worth checking your citizenship status before you plan around it.
Every Singapore Citizen aged 25 and above received an opening credit of $500, credited from January 2016. This is your foundation, and it does not expire.
Over the years, the government has also rolled out additional top-ups. In Budget 2020, a one-off $500 SkillsFuture Credit top-up was given to every Singapore Citizen aged 25 and above (as at 31 December 2020), and this tranche is due to expire on 31 December 2025.
Separately, a one-off Additional SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career Support) of $500 was provided to Singapore Citizens aged 40 to 60 (as at 31 December 2020). Since 1 May 2024, any balance from this credit has been merged into the $4,000 SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career) and no longer carries an expiry date.
So if you are a 28-year-old marketing executive who has never touched your credit, you are likely sitting on that base amount plus any general top-ups you were entitled to. That is enough to offset a good chunk of a subsidised WSQ course fee.
This is where things get genuinely significant. From 1 May 2024, the government introduced a $4,000 SkillsFuture Credit (Mid-Career) top-up for Singaporeans aged 40 and above. It does not expire.
Unlike the general credit, this Mid-Career top-up can only be used for selected courses with better employability outcomes, such as full qualifications, SkillsFuture Career Transition Programmes and courses aligned to Progressive Wage Model sectors. These are tagged on the MySkillsFuture portal, so check the tag before assuming a short course qualifies.
Picture a 45-year-old who has spent two decades in retail operations and now wants to pivot into digital marketing. That person can potentially stack their base credit with the $4,000 Mid-Career top-up, which changes the maths completely when you are eyeing a longer training pathway.
The key takeaway: if you are 40 or older, you almost certainly have far more to work with than you realise.
Do not assume your balance based on your age alone, because top-ups and expiry dates vary. Always verify the exact figure before you enrol so you know how much you are paying out of pocket.
To check, log in to the MySkillsFuture portal using your Singpass, then look for the SkillsFuture Credit summary on your dashboard.
I always tell learners to do this first. There is nothing worse than budgeting for a course based on a number in your head, only to find your usable credit is different once you are at the payment stage.
Here is the part that trips up most people: your SkillsFuture Credit cannot be spent on just any course you fancy. It only works for courses that have been approved under the SkillsFuture Credit scheme.
The easiest way to check is the MySkillsFuture course directory. If a course appears there with a valid course reference code, it qualifies. If it does not, you are paying out of pocket.
Approved courses generally fall into a few buckets, and once you see them, you will recognise most of what is on offer in Singapore.
Across in-demand domains, you will find plenty of eligible options. In digital marketing, you can pick up SEO, paid ads, and content strategy, and it helps to know the digital marketing channels worth investing your learning in before you commit. In data analytics, you might take a course on Excel, SQL, or Power BI. Cybersecurity, UX/UI design, and AI skills such as prompt engineering or applied machine learning also have approved courses, many of them WSQ certified.
Here is a distinction I always flag for people. The general SkillsFuture Credit and the Mid-Career top-up (for Singaporeans aged 40 and above) do not draw from the same list of approved courses.
The Mid-Career top-up is deliberately more restricted. It can only be used for selected training programmes chosen for stronger employability outcomes, often full qualifications or substantial reskilling programmes rather than short one-off workshops.
So if you are 42 and eyeing a two-day introductory course, check carefully. That course might accept your general credit but not your top-up.
Say you are a marketing executive comparing two options. Course A is a WSQ Digital Marketing course listed on MySkillsFuture with a TGS reference code. Course B is a weekend watercolour painting class you found through a private studio.
Course A qualifies because it is approved and coded under the scheme. Course B, however enjoyable, is a hobby course with no SkillsFuture approval, so you cannot claim your credit for it.
Always verify the course eligibility code before you sign up. Look for the TGS reference code (you will see it as something like TGS-XXXXXXXXXX) on the course listing, and confirm which credit type it accepts. Doing this five-minute check upfront saves you the frustration of a rejected claim later.
Once you have decided on a course, the actual claim process is more straightforward than most people expect. Let me walk you through it using a real scenario: you have just decided to enrol in an Equinet WSQ course, and you want to use your SkillsFuture Credit to offset the fees.
Not every course qualifies, so the first thing I always tell learners to do is check that the course is SkillsFuture Credit eligible.
You can do this by searching for the course on the MySkillsFuture portal. If it appears in the course directory with a course reference number, it is approved for credit.
For example, if you are signing up for an Equinet WSQ digital marketing course, look for the specific course run you plan to attend. Each intake has its own reference number, and you will need that number when you submit your claim.
One timing rule catches many people off guard: you can submit a SkillsFuture Credit claim from up to 60 days before your course start date, as set out on the MySkillsFuture portal. If your class starts in three months, you simply wait until the window opens.
Here is the flow once your window is open and you have registered with the training provider.
The most important detail is the fee amount. Your claim should match the actual net fee you pay after the SWDA subsidy has been applied, not the full sticker price.
So if an Equinet WSQ course lists a full fee but you qualify for SWDA funding as a Singapore Citizen, you enter the subsidised net amount. Your training provider will give you this figure, and it usually appears on your invoice or registration confirmation.
You then decide how much of your available credit to use. You do not have to spend it all at once. If your net fee is small, you can apply just enough to cover it and keep the rest for future courses.
After you submit, SWDA reviews the claim. Once approved, the credit is paid directly to the training provider on your behalf.
In practice, this means you may only need to pay the portion of the fee not covered by your credit, depending on how your provider handles the arrangement.
Keep an eye on your email and portal notifications, because if any detail does not match, such as the fee amount or course run, the claim can be sent back for correction. Fixing it is usually as simple as resubmitting with the right figure.
Here is the part most people miss: your SkillsFuture Credit is rarely meant to be used alone. It sits on top of a stack of subsidies, and when you layer them correctly, a course that looks expensive can end up costing you almost nothing out of pocket.
The trick is knowing which offsets apply to you based on your citizenship, your age, and whether your employer is paying. Get this wrong, and you either leave money on the table or overpay upfront.
Every SWDA-supported course, like a WSQ digital marketing programme, comes with a baseline course fee grant for Singapore Citizens and PRs. This is applied by the training provider before you pay, so you only see the net fee.
If you are aged 40 and above, you qualify for the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES), which pushes the SWDA subsidy up to 90% of course fees for eligible SWDA-funded and WSQ courses, per MySkillsFuture.
Let me walk you through an illustrative example (figures are indicative; confirm current fees and subsidy rates on MySkillsFuture). Say a WSQ digital marketing course has a full fee of $1,000 before GST. After the baseline SWDA subsidy of up to 70% for Singapore Citizens, a younger learner might see a net fee of around $300. A learner aged 40 and above with the Mid-Career Enhanced Subsidy (MCES) of up to 90% might see that same nett fee drop closer to $100.
Then you apply your SkillsFuture Credit against that remaining net fee. With enough credit in your account, your out-of-pocket cost can hit zero.
For younger Singaporeans, the Post-Secondary Education Account (PSEA) can sometimes be tapped for approved courses too, so check if that balance applies before you dip into other funds.
If you are an NTUC union member, the Union Training Assistance Programme (UTAP) reimburses a portion of the unfunded course fee, subject to an annual cap. This is claimed after the course, so you pay the net fee first and get money back once you have completed the course and met attendance requirements.
UTAP stacks neatly on top of everything else. After SSG subsidy and SkillsFuture Credit bring your net fee down, UTAP can claw back part of whatever you actually paid.
Just remember to submit your UTAP claim within the deadline through the NTUC portal, or you forfeit the reimbursement.
If your company is footing the bill, different schemes apply. Enhanced Training Support for SMEs (ETSS) raises the subsidy level for eligible small and medium enterprises, lowering what the employer pays.
On top of that, employers can use the SkillsFuture Enterprise Credit (SFEC), jointly administered by SWDA and Enterprise Singapore, to offset out-of-pocket costs for workforce and enterprise transformation, including eligible training.
The current SFEC scheme will expire on 30 November 2026, with a redesigned SFEC taking effect from 1 December 2026. Employers should check the latest official guidance to confirm eligibility, supported programmes, and claim deadlines before enrolling.
The key takeaway: always confirm your exact eligibility before enrolling. Your citizenship, your age bracket, your union membership, and your employer’s SME status all determine which layers you unlock, so speak to the training provider’s course consultant who can map the stack to your situation.
I have watched plenty of people treat their SkillsFuture Credit in ways that quietly waste it, and the frustrating part is that almost every one of these mistakes is easy to avoid once you know what to look for.
Let me walk you through the ones I see most often.
The biggest myth is that your credit is money you can withdraw. It is not.
You can only use it against approved courses, and the funds go directly to the training provider, not into your bank account.
Which leads to the second trap: panic spending. When the credit first rolled out, many Singaporeans rushed to sign up for random courses, cooking classes, photography, whatever, just to “use it up” before some imagined deadline.
Here is the reassuring truth: your opening tranche of credit does not expire. The top-ups may have their own validity windows, but you do not need to burn everything today on a course you will never apply.
The more expensive mistake is picking a course because it sounds comfortable rather than because it moves your career forward.
I think of it like choosing digital marketing channels. A beginner often defaults to the platform they personally use most, when the smarter move is to pick channels based on where their goal actually lives. The same discipline applies to picking metrics: you focus on the important digital marketing metrics to prioritise for your goals, not the ones that are easy to read.
Your course choice deserves that same “fit over familiarity” test. If you want to move into a marketing or data role, a beginner Excel refresher you already half know is a poorer use of credit than a structured course that fills a real gap.
Here are the errors I flag most, with the fix for each:
The through line is simple: treat every claim as an investment mapped to a clear goal, and the credit stops being spare change and starts being a career lever.
Here is the mistake I see most often: people spend their SkillsFuture Credit on whatever course looks interesting that week, then realise a year later it did nothing for their pay or their prospects.
Your credit is finite, so treat each course like an investment in a specific outcome, not a hobby.
Before you pick anything, get clear on where you want to be in two to three years, then work backwards to the skills that get you there.
I always point people to MySkillsFuture’s skills demand insights and the Skills Framework, which lay out the career pathways, job roles, and skills that matter in each sector. These tools also flag Singapore’s economic priorities: the digital economy, AI adoption, and green skills.
Take a scenario I have seen play out many times. An administrative staffer at a local SME wants out of pure admin work and into something with more growth. She checks the Skills Framework for Digital Marketing, sees the roles she could grow into, and starts with a WSQ digital marketing course to build a foundation.
Once she has the basics, she layers on specialised skills like SEO or web analytics, because those are the areas where SMEs consistently struggle to hire. That is a mapped pathway, not a random purchase.
Not all courses carry the same weight with employers, so I lean towards WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) and other recognised certifications wherever possible.
WSQ courses are quality-assured by SWDA, the body that awards the certifications, which means a hiring manager in Singapore recognises them instantly. They also tend to be SWDA-funded, so your out-of-pocket cost drops significantly before you even apply your credit.
A recognised certification does two jobs at once: it teaches you the skill and gives you proof you can put on your CV.
Accredited training providers like Equinet Academy run SSG-funded WSQ courses across digital marketing, data, and analytics, which is exactly the kind of credential our SME staffer wants when she applies for that first marketing role.
The last filter I apply is simple: will you actually do the work, or just watch slides?
Skills like SEO, analytics, and campaign management only stick when you practise them on real briefs. A course where you build a keyword strategy, set up a live analytics dashboard, or run a mock campaign will serve you far better than one that ends with a multiple-choice quiz.
When you compare options, look for these signals of an application-based course:
For our transitioning admin staffer, a course that has her use the best keyword research tools to build practical SEO skills means she finishes with a portfolio piece, not just a certificate. That is what turns your credit into a genuine career move.
If you are wondering where to spend your SkillsFuture Credit for the best return, digital marketing is one of the strongest bets you can make right now.
Singapore’s whole economy is tilting digital, and the marketers who can actually run campaigns, read data, and use AI tools are the ones getting hired and promoted.
Look at the direction the country is moving. Through IMDA’s Digital Enterprise initiatives and broader workforce digitalisation efforts, SMEs across Singapore are being nudged to sell online, adopt digital tools, and reach customers on platforms rather than shopfronts alone.
That shift creates a real problem for many businesses: they have a website and a few social accounts, but nobody who knows how to make them work.
I see this constantly with F& B owners, retail founders, and mid-career professionals who want to switch tracks. They can post on Instagram, but they cannot explain why one campaign converts and another burns budget.
Employers now expect a marketer to be comfortable across SEO, social media, paid ads, analytics, and increasingly AI tools like generative content assistants. That combination is exactly where demand outstrips supply.
This is where a WSQ digital marketing course becomes a smart use of your credit. Because these courses are SWDA-supported, the subsidy already covers a large chunk of the fee, and then you apply your SkillsFuture Credit on top of the remaining amount.
For many Singapore Citizens, that stacking brings the out-of-pocket cost close to zero, hard to beat for a skill this practical. (PRs benefit from the SSG subsidy but cannot use SkillsFuture Credit.)
A good programme takes you from foundations right through to running live channels. Here is the kind of ladder you can expect:
If that ladder maps to where you want to go, this is the natural place to start. Enrol in Equinet Academy’s WSQ Digital Marketing Essentials course, an SSG-funded, SkillsFuture Credit-eligible programme that takes you from foundations to live campaigns, and lets you offset the net fee with the credit sitting in your MySkillsFuture account.
The reason I push people towards this route is that the skills transfer immediately. You do not wait months to see value.
Picture a bakery owner who enrols, uses SSG subsidy plus SkillsFuture Credit to bring the fee down to almost nothing, and finishes the course. Within a week, she has mapped a simple campaign plan and set up tracking to see which posts actually drive online orders.
That is the difference between guessing and knowing. If you want a taste of one of those core skills, our guide on how to use Google Analytics 4 as a beginner shows how the reporting works in practice.
The most valuable outcome is not the certificate; it is walking away able to plan, launch, and measure a real campaign the same month you finish.
If you take away one thing from this guide, let it be this: your SkillsFuture Credit is a lasting investment in your own growth, not a coupon that will vanish if you blink.
Your base SkillsFuture Credit does not expire, so there is no reason to rush into a random sign-up just to use it up. The smartest move is to be deliberate about what you choose.
Remember that your credit can be stacked with course fee subsidies, which means a well-chosen WSQ course can cost you very little out of pocket while giving you skills employers actually want.
The difference between wasted credit and career value comes down to alignment. A rushed sign-up for a hobby class feels good for a weekend, but a course tied to in-demand skills can shift your salary, your role, or even your industry.
So here is your practical next step. Log in to MySkillsFuture with your SingPass, check your current balance, and shortlist a few accredited, career-relevant courses before you commit to anything.
If you are weighing up where those in-demand skills sit right now, digital marketing is one of the safest bets. Almost every Singapore business, from a neighbourhood F&B brand to a growing e-commerce store, needs someone who understands SEO, paid ads, and social media.
That is exactly why I would point you towards checking Equinet Academy Courses; we have courses that are funded, hands-on programme that turns your credit into a skill set you can apply the very next Monday at work.
Lifelong learning in Singapore is not a slogan; it is a genuine advantage you have been given. Use your credit wisely, keep building on it, and your future self will thank you for starting today.
