You have the app idea. You can picture the screens, the buttons, the flow a customer would tap through. What you cannot do is code it, and so it sits in a Notion doc waiting for a developer who is booked out for the next six weeks.
I see this constantly with the people I train in Singapore: the solo founder validating a side hustle, the product manager who needs a clickable version to show a stakeholder tomorrow, the marketer who wants a lead-capture tool without raising a dev ticket. The idea is real. The bottleneck is the design-to-dev handoff.
That is exactly the gap Figma Make is built to close. It is Figma’s AI-powered, prompt-to-app feature: you describe what you want in plain English, or point it at an existing Figma design, and it generates a working, interactive prototype or web app you can click through and refine.
You do not need to write a single line of code to get started. You do need to understand what it can realistically do, and where it stops.
Let me show you how it actually works.
Let me clear up the confusion first, because I get asked this a lot. Figma Make is a generative AI feature built inside Figma that turns natural language prompts, or your existing designs, into functional, code-backed prototypes and small web apps.
That last part matters. This is not a clickable mockup that only looks like it works. Figma Make produces real code underneath, so buttons actually do things, forms accept input, and simple logic runs.
It sits squarely in the 2024 to 2025 wave of what people call vibe coding, where you describe what you want in plain English and an AI assembles a working version. Tools in this space are changing how quickly a non-developer can go from idea to something testable.
For years, a Figma design file was static. You drew screens, and to make them feel alive, you wired up prototype links, so clicking a button jumped to another frame.
That is smart, but it is still an illusion. Nothing calculates, nothing saves, nothing responds to what a user types.
Figma Make changes to the ceiling. If you prompt it for a booking form with a date picker and a confirmation message, you get real interactive behaviour, not just a pre-planned screen transition. That is the shift from a clickable prototype to a genuinely functional app.
Figma Make does not replace your design files, and this is where teams often get tangled. Your design files and component libraries remain the source of truth for visuals and brand consistency.
Dev Mode still exists for handing structured specs and code snippets to engineers when you scale up. Figma Make lives alongside these, letting you generate and publish a working web app from within the same environment you already design in.
Think of it as one more layer in your toolkit, sitting between design and development. If you like keeping your stack lean, browse a practical list of digital marketing tools and platforms to see how it slots in.
Picture a two-person startup at Block 71 with an idea for a tuition matching app. They have a designer and a founder, but no engineer yet, and hiring one before proving demand is a risk.
With Figma Make, the designer builds a working MVP, sends it to a handful of parents, and watches whether anyone actually completes the sign-up flow. That validation happens in days, not months, and before a single salary is committed.
This fits neatly with IMDA (Infocomm Media Development Authority)‘s ongoing push toward digital adoption among local SME (Small and Medium-sized Enterprises), where the barrier has always been cost and technical skill. Figma Make lowers both, letting lean teams test before they invest.
The honest answer is that Figma Make is not for everyone, and knowing whether it fits your situation saves you a lot of wasted effort. Let me map it to the people I actually see reaching for it.
If you recognise yourself in one of these, you are in the right place.
Picture a marketing executive at a local F&B chain, maybe a bubble tea or hawker-inspired brand with a handful of outlets. Leadership wants a loyalty sign-up flow, but nobody wants to commit agency budget on a hunch.
Instead of writing a brief and waiting weeks, she opens Figma Make one evening and describes the flow she wants: a landing screen, a sign-up form, and a confirmation page with a points balance. By the next morning she has a clickable, working version she can send around on Slack.
Now the conversation is grounded in something real. She can test whether the loyalty offer belongs on the website, in an email, or on social, which ties directly into choosing the digital marketing channels worth prioritising before spending a cent.
That overnight prototype is worth more than a polished slide deck, because people react to something they can tap.
Figma Make shines for validation, prototypes, and quick internal tools. It is the wrong choice for complex, security-sensitive systems.
If you are handling payments, sensitive personal data under the PDPA, or anything that needs proper authentication, audit logs, and long-term maintenance, that belongs with real engineers. Use Figma Make to prove the idea, then hand the validated concept to a proper build.
If reading this makes you think you would enjoy this kind of work, you are not alone. Plenty of career switchers are moving into UX and no-code roles.
Formal upskilling helps you go from tinkering to employable, and SkillsFuture Credit can offset the cost of eligible courses. That makes exploring a UX or no-code path far less daunting when you are funding your own transition.
The best way to understand Figma Make is to build something small with it, so let me walk you through a first project as if you have never written a line of code. You will not need to.
First, you need a Figma account. Head to figma.com and sign up with your work email, which is what most Singapore teams I train use so their files sit alongside colleagues.
Figma Make lives inside the newer Figma experience rather than the classic file editor, so once you are logged in, look for the Make option on your home dashboard or when creating a new file. If you do not see it, check that you are on a plan that includes it, as availability has shifted between the free and paid tiers over time.
For a first play, the free plan is usually enough to generate and preview something. If you plan to build regularly or share prototypes with a client, a paid seat gives you more room and fewer limits.
Now for the fun part. Make works by turning a plain English description into a working interface, so your prompt is everything.
Vague prompts give vague results. Instead of typing “make me a website”, picture a real business and describe it in detail.
Here is a prompt I like to use in workshops:
Build a booking page for a nail salon in Bugis. Include a date picker, a time slot selector, a field for the customer’s name and phone number, and a confirmation screen that thanks them and shows their chosen slot. Use a soft pink and cream colour scheme.
Notice how specific that is. It names the business type, the location, the exact fields, the flow, and the look. That specificity is what separates a usable draft from a generic template.
Take a screenshot the moment your result appears. Screenshotting each stage helps you compare versions later and follow this walkthrough at your own pace.
Your first output will rarely be perfect, and that is completely normal. Make it conversational, so you refine by talking to it, not by rebuilding from scratch.
Look at what came back, then ask for one change at a time so you can see exactly what each prompt does. You might type things like these:
Work through them one by one, screenshotting after each so you build a clear before-and-after trail. Keep your requests concrete: “make it nicer” gives Make nothing to work with, while “increase the spacing between form fields” gives it a clear instruction.
Within a handful of prompts, you will have a booking page that looks and behaves close to what a real Bugis salon could use, all without touching code.
Here is the truth I learned the hard way with Figma Make: the app you get is only as good as the prompt you give it. Type something vague and you will get something vague back.
The tool is generous, but it cannot read your mind. If you say “make me a calculator app”, it will guess at everything: the fields, the currency, the styling, the flow. Usually it guesses generically.
When I write a prompt, I try to answer five questions before I hit generate. Miss one and the output drifts.
Let me show you the difference with a real example I use in workshops.
The vague version: “Build a renovation cost calculator.” Figma Make will produce a bland form with generic dollar signs and made-up categories that mean nothing to a local user.
The detailed version reads more like this:
Build an HDB renovation quote calculator for Singapore homeowners planning a BTO fit-out. Include screens for room selection, a form with fields for flat type (3-room, 4-room, 5-room), works needed (hacking, carpentry, plumbing, painting), and a live estimate in SGD. Show a summary screen with a total price range and a button to email the quote. Use a clean, trustworthy style in navy and white.
The second prompt gives you something a Singapore renovation firm could actually put in front of a customer. The pricing fields make sense, the currency is correct, and the flow matches how people really shop for renovation.
Notice what just happened. The better prompt was really just clearer thinking, expressed in words.
That skill, structuring an instruction so a machine produces exactly what you want, is prompt engineering, and it carries across every AI tool you will ever touch. It is worth developing properly, which is why we teach structured prompting alongside our other AI and marketing courses at Equinet Academy.
There is also a copywriting angle here. The microcopy inside your app, the button labels, the empty states, the error messages, all improve when you apply proper copywriting principles rather than accepting the default text.
If you have ever explored the differences between copywriting and content writing, you already know that tight, purposeful words guide behaviour. Feed those words into your prompt, and the app comes back sounding like a product, not a prototype.
Before you get carried away, let me be honest with you about where Figma Make shines and where it quietly falls apart. I have seen too many people treat it as a full replacement for a development team, then get frustrated when it cannot do what they imagined.
The sweet spot is anything visual, front-end, and iteration-heavy. If you need to get an idea in front of real people quickly, this is where it earns its keep.
In my experience, these are the projects that work well:
A local F&B startup, for example, could build a clickable reservation flow, walk it past ten regulars over kopi, and reshape the whole experience before writing a single line of production code. That is the real value: speed of learning.
Now the harder truth. Figma Make is not built for heavy backend logic, secure payment processing, large-scale data handling, or anything sitting inside a regulated space like healthcare or finance.
If your app needs to store thousands of records, run complex business rules, or take credit card details, you are past what a no-code prototype should ever carry into production. Payment security in particular is not something to improvise.
Here in Singapore, there is one line I always draw clearly for clients. The moment your app collects any personal data, even just a name and email on a sign-up form, you are under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).
A pretty form built in Figma Make does not magically become compliant. You still need clear consent, a stated purpose for collecting the data, and a proper plan for storing and eventually disposing of it.
Picture a Singapore charity building a volunteer registration flow. They can absolutely use Figma Make to design and test the registration prototype, gathering feedback from coordinators and volunteers until the flow feels right.
But when it is time to go live and actually store names, NRIC (National Registration Identity Card) fragments, or contact details, they should hand that prototype to a developer for a PDPA-compliant production build with secure storage and consent handling done properly.
Once it is live, you will want to measure whether people actually complete the flow, which is where knowing how to use Google Analytics 4 to measure what you build becomes just as important as the design itself.
Treat Figma Make as your prototyping and front-end powerhouse, not your production database.
If your team already lives inside Figma, Figma Make is less a new tool to learn and more a natural extension of the work you are already doing. You design once, then turn those same frames into something people can actually click through.
Picture a small design agency in Singapore preparing for a pitch. Instead of walking the client through a deck of static slides, they open a live app on the screen and let the client tap through it. That difference in the room is often what wins the account.
The starting point is the design file you have already built. Rather than rebuilding your mockups from scratch, you point Make at your existing frames and describe the behaviour you want in plain language.
A frame that was just a picture of a booking form becomes a form that responds when you type in it. A button that used to do nothing now navigates to the next screen.
For a lean three person studio, this is where the productivity gains show up. One designer can produce a working flow in an afternoon that previously needed a developer and a week of front end effort.
A prototype that wins a pitch still needs to be built properly for launch, and this is where Dev Mode earns its place. Make generates real code behind your interactive screens, and Dev Mode lets your developers inspect it.
Your engineers can read the specs, measurements, and generated components without pinging the designer every ten minutes. That shared reference removes a lot of the back and forth that usually slows handoff down.
For the agency in our scenario, this means the version they demo to the client and the version their developer picks up afterwards are grounded in the same source. Nothing gets lost in translation between the pitch and the build.
The value here is continuity: The same file carries an idea from concept to demo to development.
Once your flow works, you publish it and get a live link. You send that link to the client, the stakeholder, or the reviewer, and they open it in a browser with no Figma account required.
That is far more persuasive than a PDF. A property portal client can try the search flow themselves, and a busy director can react to something real rather than imagining how it might feel.
For small teams pitching against bigger competitors, a working prototype is a genuine differentiator that costs you very little extra time to produce.
When I first started testing AI app builders, the choice felt overwhelming. Every week a new tool promised to turn a text prompt into a working product, and honestly, most of them do a decent job at the surface level.
So where does Figma Make actually fit? The short answer is that it shines when your work already lives inside Figma and you want to move from design to interactive prototype without jumping tools.
Let me break down the main players you have probably heard about, because each one has a natural home.
Source: Bolt
Source: Lovable
Source: v0
Source: Bubble
Source: Webflow
Source: Figma Make
The pattern I keep noticing is this: Figma Make is a prototyping and communication tool first, while Bubble, Webflow, Bolt, and Lovable lean toward production.
Picture a solopreneur in Singapore launching a small tuition-matching service. She has a limited budget, no coding background, and needs two things: a way to test her app idea and a public marketing site.
Here is how I would guide her. For the first month, use Figma Make to prototype the booking flow and put it in front of a handful of parents to see if the concept lands.
Once the idea is validated, build the actual marketing site in Webflow, because that is where SEO, custom domains, and long-term hosting really pay off. Pair that with some of the free SEO tools worth adding to your stack so the site can be found without extra spend.
On cost, remember that adoption support exists. SMEs can tap the Productivity Solutions Grant (PSG) and other Enterprise Singapore schemes to offset approved digital and no-code tools, so check the current pre-approved list before committing to any paid plan.
My honest take: do not force one tool to do everything. Use Figma Make to prove the idea cheaply, then choose the production tool that matches how your product needs to live in the real world.
When I first started using Figma Make with teams, the same handful of mistakes came up again and again. The tool is powerful, but it rewards good process and punishes rushing. Here is what trips people up and how to sidestep each pitfall.
The most common error is feeding the AI a one line prompt like “make me a booking app” and hoping for magic. You get a generic layout that fits nobody.
Instead, describe your user, their goal, and the key screens. For a physiotherapy clinic in Toa Payoh, you might specify appointment slots, patient intake forms, and a reminder flow, not just “booking”.
The second trap is expecting production grade output. Figma Make gives you a working prototype, not a launch ready app that handles payments, PDPA compliant data storage, or edge cases.
Treat the output as a starting point, not a finished product. That single shift in mindset saves the most heartache.
I have watched two Singapore teams take very different paths, and the contrast says everything.
One team, a small F&B startup, loved their Figma Make prototype so much they pushed it live almost as is. They skipped accessibility checks entirely. Colour contrast was poor, tap targets were tiny, and screen reader users could not navigate it. After complaints and a failed internal review, they had to rebuild large chunks from scratch.
Another team, a community services outfit, did the boring but smart thing first. They ran the prototype past five real users, including an older volunteer and someone using assistive tech, before writing any production code.
The difference in outcome was night and day. The second team shipped once, not twice.
Three checks I insist on before anyone calls a prototype “done”:
None of these fixes work if you skip the thinking that comes before the tool. Design thinking and a structured UX process are what keep Figma Make honest.
That means defining the problem, mapping user journeys, then prototyping, rather than jumping straight to screens. It also means deciding upfront how you will measure success, the same discipline behind tracking important digital marketing metrics for a campaign.
Get the process right, and Figma Make becomes an accelerator. Skip it, and you just generate polished mistakes faster.
Here is the uncomfortable truth I share with everyone excited about Figma Make: the AI will happily generate a login screen, a dashboard, and a checkout flow in minutes, but none of that makes you employable on its own.
What employers actually pay for is the judgement sitting on top of the tool. Anyone can prompt an interface into existence, but very few people can tell you why the primary button belongs in the bottom right, or why that three-step form should really be one.
AI is brilliant at producing screens. It is genuinely poor at knowing whether those screens solve a real user’s problem.
When I review portfolios, I can spot AI generated layouts instantly, and they usually share the same weaknesses: cluttered hierarchy, inconsistent spacing, and flows that ignore what the user actually came to do.
The value you add is UX and UI fundamentals: information hierarchy, usability heuristics, accessibility, and prototyping that lets you test an idea before a single line of code exists.
Figma Make speeds up the making, but you still decide what is worth making.
Think of it as a skills stack. Prompting sits at the bottom, and the higher tiers, the ones hiring managers care about, are things a model cannot do for you.
Design communication belongs near the top of that stack too. Being able to defend a decision to a product manager, or explain to a developer why a state exists, is what turns a nice mockup into shipped work.
I meet a lot of mid-career professionals in Singapore who feel stuck: an operations executive, a marketer, or a project coordinator who wants into UX or no-code product roles but has no formal design background.
The pathway I usually point them to is straightforward. You tap your SkillsFuture Credit to offset course fees, choose an SSG (SkillsFuture Singapore)-funded programme so the out of pocket cost stays sensible, and pick training that gives you structure rather than scattered YouTube tutorials.
That structure matters. A random tool tour teaches you buttons, whereas a proper curriculum teaches you the reasoning, the workflow, and the vocabulary you will use in interviews.
This is exactly where Equinet Academy’s WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) and SSG-accredited Figma training fits. It gives you the fundamentals and the hands on prototyping practice that make Figma Make output genuinely usable, not just impressive at first glance.
And the skills compound. Once you can design and build a product page, you will want it to actually get found, which is where understanding SEO content best practices for the pages you build rounds out your value.
Learn the craft first, and the AI becomes a force multiplier instead of a crutch.
Here is the honest truth after everything we have covered: Figma Make does not make coding obsolete, but it does knock down the wall that used to stop non-developers from ever seeing their idea come to life.
If you have a clear concept, you can now describe it in plain language and watch a working prototype take shape in front of you.
That said, the tool rewards the people who put in the thinking. The clearer your prompts, the more honest your expectations, and the stronger your grasp of basic UX, the better your results will be.
I have seen this play out again and again. A marketing manager at an SME who understands her users writes far better prompts than someone who just wants “an app that looks nice”.
So who really benefits? The same four groups from earlier: marketers spinning up campaign pages fast, founders validating an idea before spending on developers, product managers building clickable prototypes for stakeholder buy-in, and designers turning flat mockups into something interactive.
Two caveats worth repeating. If your app collects personal data, you are still responsible for PDPA compliance, and that is on you, not the tool. And a Figma Make prototype is a starting point, not a production-ready product you can launch to thousands of users without proper engineering.
The missing piece for most people is design judgement, and that is something you build with practice and structure.
If you want to move from generating prototypes to genuinely understanding layout, hierarchy, and interaction design, the What The Figma (WTF) course is the natural next step. It is SkillsFuture eligible and SSG-accredited, so you can offset the cost while building skills that make every prompt you write sharper.
Your idea deserves more than a rough draft. Go build the foundation to bring it to life properly.
