You are staring at Figma’s pricing page, doing the maths in your head, and it does not look good. On a polytechnic or university allowance, a monthly subscription for a design tool feels like a luxury you cannot justify next to transport, food, and textbooks.
Meanwhile, every internship listing and design brief seems to assume you already know your way around Figma. Your supervisor at that UX internship expects you to jump into shared files on day one, and the gap between “expected to know” and “can actually afford” feels wider every semester.
Here is the good news I wish someone had told me sooner: Figma Education is not a watered-down student discount. It is a genuine, fully free Education plan that hands you the same Professional tier features working designers use every day.
In this article, I will walk you through exactly what a Singapore student gets, how to verify your status without fuss, and how to turn that free access into a portfolio that lands interviews.
By the end, you will know how to claim your free plan and, more importantly, how to make it count when you start applying for design roles here in Singapore.
Let me clear up the confusion first, because a lot of students think Figma only comes in a free version and an expensive one. There is a third option built just for you.
Figma Education is a free upgrade that gives verified students and educators the same collaboration and prototyping power as Figma’s paid Professional plan. In plain terms, you get the premium tier at no cost, covering both Figma Design and FigJam, as long as you verify your student or educator status.
That matters because Figma’s always-free Starter plan is deliberately limited. You are capped on the number of files and projects you can create, which becomes a real problem the moment your coursework gets serious.
The differences are easy to picture once you see what each plan unlocks.
The takeaway is simple: Education gives you Professional-level capability without the monthly bill, which is a genuine head start.
The plan is not just about one app. It covers Figma Design, where you build interfaces and prototypes, and FigJam, the online whiteboard where you run brainstorms, user journey maps, and affinity diagrams.
Picture an NUS or Singapore Polytechnic student working through a final-year UX module. With the Education plan, that student can create unlimited project files, keep a full version history of every design iteration, and invite classmates to co-edit the same prototype in real time.
That mirrors how design agencies here actually work, where a whole team edits one shared file rather than emailing static screenshots back and forth. Version history alone saves you when a lecturer asks to see how your design evolved across three weeks.
This is not an accident of the tool. Figma co-founder and CEO Dylan Field has said he expects design to become “even more collaborative” as more people join the design process, and the Education plan gives you that team-based way of working from your very first module.
Figma is the de facto design tool across the local tech scene, and that is not an exaggeration. Tech firms and government digital service teams here work in Figma every day. GovTech even publishes a Figma UI kit through the Singapore Government Design System, so public-sector designers are using the same tool you will learn in school.
So when you learn Figma in school, you are not picking up a niche academic skill. You are training on the exact tool your future employer expects you to open on day one.
It also sits alongside the wider stack that Singapore digital teams rely on, and you can see how it fits within an extensive list of digital marketing tools and platforms that local employers use.
Figma fluency maps directly onto real hiring demand here, which makes the free Education plan one of the smartest tools to master while you still qualify.
Before you get excited about free Pro features, let me save you some time by explaining exactly who Figma Education is meant for.
The short version is that it targets active students and educators at recognised institutions, and it verifies that status before granting access.
To qualify, you need to be old enough to consent to Figma’s terms on your own, without a parent or guardian, and you must be a current student or educator applying with your school email. In practice, that comfortably covers secondary students, junior college learners, and everyone above.
Enrolment matters as much as age. A gap year, a deferred semester, or a graduated status can all cause verification to fail, because Figma is checking that you are studying right now, not that you once did.
Educators and faculty qualify too. If you teach a design, computing, or media module at any level, you can apply on the same footing as your students and set up shared education seats for a class.
In practice, the Singapore education landscape maps neatly onto Figma’s criteria. Students at the ITE, the five polytechnics (Singapore Polytechnic, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, and Republic Polytechnic), and the autonomous universities (NUS, NTU, SMU, SUTD, SIT, and SUSS) generally have no trouble being recognised.
Secondary and JC students who meet the age minimum can also apply, which is handy if you are already dabbling in design portfolios before tertiary study.
Private and continuing-education learners may qualify too, as long as the school is a recognised institution. A student on a full-time diploma at an MOE-registered private college, for example, often has a valid path to verification.
Here is the common edge case I get asked about. If you are a Singaporean studying at an overseas or online university, you can still apply, because eligibility follows your institution and enrolment rather than your physical location. Verification still applies, so keep your student credentials handy.
Adult learners on short courses sit in a grey zone. Figma does extend education access to structured, mentor-led bootcamps and courses, but only if the training provider is an approved Figma education partner that verifies students on its behalf, and that access runs for six months rather than a year. You cannot self-verify as a bootcamp student.
So if you are attending a weekend workshop or a self-paced online course, you usually will not qualify. Ask your training provider whether they are a Figma education partner. If not, start a free Figma trial to practise, or check whether your employer already has a team plan you can join.
The same goes for anyone who has finished their programme. Once you graduate, your education access winds down, and moving to a paid or free tier is the honest next step.
Getting your Figma Education plan sorted is far less scary than it looks, and most of my students in Singapore are up and running within a day.
Here is the sequence I walk every first-timer through:
This is the fastest route, and I always tell students to try it first.
If you sign up with an address like @u.nus.edu, @e.ntu.edu.sg, or @ichat.sp.edu.sg, Figma often recognises the domain and approves you almost instantly.
Using your official school email is the single biggest thing you can do to speed up auto-approval. Singapore poly and university emails tend to follow predictable formats, so Figma’s system matches them cleanly.
If you only ever check your personal inbox, log in to your student webmail first so you can catch the verification email when it arrives.
If SheerID cannot confirm your enrolment automatically, it may ask you to upload supporting documents instead. A clear photo of your matriculation card or a recent enrolment letter usually does the job, as long as the document proves you are currently enrolled. A course syllabus will not be accepted.
Here is my PDPA reminder, and I mean this seriously. Only upload the exact document requested and nothing more. If your matriculation card shows your name and student number, that is enough, so there is no need to send bank statements or your NRIC.
Practising data minimisation protects you, and it is a good habit for anyone heading into a design career where you will handle other people’s data too.
Approval usually lands quickly for email verification, while document review can take a few days, so do not panic if it is not instant.
If you are declined, the most common reasons are a blurry document, an expired enrolment date, or a mismatch between your account email and the school on your proof.
Fix the obvious issue first, then reapply with a clearer scan or your active school email. If it still fails, verification issues are handled by SheerID’s support team rather than Figma directly, so contact them before resubmitting multiple times. You can also ask your school’s IT helpdesk to confirm your official student email format.
The perks that come with Figma Education are not just a longer feature list. Each one maps to a specific task you will face in a design module, so let me walk you through them the way I would explain to a student staring at a blank project brief.
Unlimited files and projects sound abstract until you have a group assignment due in six weeks.
Picture a Temasek Polytechnic UX team designing a mock hawker centre ordering app for a local SME. With no file limits, they can split the semester project cleanly: one file for research and personas, another for wireframes, and a third for the hi-fi mockups.
Team libraries are where the free plan really starts to feel professional. Your group can define a shared colour palette, button styles and card components once, then everyone pulls from the same library.
That means when one teammate changes the primary orange to match the hawker stall branding, it updates everywhere. This is exactly how a real design system works inside a product team, and it saves you from the classic problem of four slightly different blues across one prototype.
Version history is the feature that quietly rescues your grade. If a teammate accidentally deletes a screen at 11 pm the night before submission, you can roll back to a named checkpoint instead of rebuilding from memory.
I always tell students to name their versions after key milestones, like “post usability test v2”, so the history reads like a project log.
Here is how these features tend to line up with coursework stages:
FigJam deserves a special mention because so much group work now happens across different homes and campuses. Your team can run affinity mapping on sticky notes together in real time, then vote on which pain points matter most for the SME.
Dev Mode is the bridge to your friends in the computing or infocomm modules.
When your UX team finishes the hawker centre app mockup, your developer classmates can open Dev Mode to read exact measurements, colour codes, and spacing without pestering you on Telegram. That mirrors a genuine designer-to-developer handoff.
To pull all this together, run a usability test using your clickable prototype: recruit a few classmates, give them a task like “order two plates of chicken rice”, and note where they hesitate.
Structuring that whole flow, from research to handoff, is the same workflow taught in proper UX programmes, and it pairs well with a guide to creating a content calendar for planning projects, so your team hits every milestone on time.
Free Figma Education access is only worth something once it produces work an employer can judge. The tool is the easy part. The hard part is turning your student projects into a portfolio that survives a five-minute skim by a hiring manager.
I always tell students the same thing: aim for two or three deep case studies, not a gallery of ten pretty screens. Depth beats volume, because interviewers want to see how you think, not just how you decorate.
A hire-worthy case study shows your process, not the polished end state alone. Anyone can make a clean UI in Figma now, so the differentiator is your reasoning.
At minimum, walk the reader through these stages:
Write the narrative like a story with tension and resolution, not a feature list. If you struggle with tone here, it helps to understand copywriting versus content writing for your case study narratives, because a case study needs both persuasive framing and clear explanation.
A case study that hides its process reads as decoration, not design work.
Anchor at least one project in a context a Singapore interviewer instantly recognises. Local relevance signals that you understand real users here, not just Dribbble trends.
Some project ideas I have seen land well:
Redesign the CDC Vouchers redemption flow so an elderly heartland resident can claim and spend without confusion. Or reimagine a public transport journey, such as buying a concession card top-up or planning an MRT-to-bus transfer during a disruption.
A hawker ordering app or a heartland retail loyalty scheme also works, because interviewers can picture their own aunties and uncles using it. When you solve a problem the hiring manager has personally felt, your case study stops being abstract.
Here is where Figma pays off directly. You do not attach a PDF and hope. You paste a shareable Figma prototype link straight into your application or portfolio site.
Set the link permission to anyone with the link can view, then test it in an incognito window so a recruiter never hits a login wall. A broken link is a silent rejection.
Many local employers now expect this by default. Design agencies and internships at startups on the Enterprise Singapore Startup SG network often ask for a Figma portfolio link in the very first application step, before any interview.
So treat your prototype links as your first impression. Label each project clearly, keep the prototype clickable end to end, and make sure the first frame a recruiter sees explains the problem in one sentence.
Here is the part that catches a lot of students off guard: your Figma Education plan is not a permanent gift. It is granted for a set period, typically up to a year, and Figma expects you to re-verify that you are still an enrolled student when that window closes.
So the free professional features you enjoy today can quietly expire if you do not keep your status current.
The good news is that your files do not vanish. Your projects stay in your account, so you will not lose that FYP prototype you spent weeks on.
The catch is that your account reverts to Starter limits. That means restrictions on the number of drafts, editors, and shared projects you can have in a single team.
Plan your re-verification around submission periods, not after them. If your account downgrades in the middle of your final polytechnic or university project, you could suddenly find yourself locked out of collaborative editing right when your teammates need to jump in.
The easiest habit is to re-verify at the start of a fresh semester. For most local universities like NUS, NTU, and SMU, that means checking your Figma status in August and again in January.
If you are at a polytechnic or ITE, align it with your own intake dates. Treat it like renewing your student concession card: a small admin task you do once at the beginning of each term so it never becomes a crisis later.
Final-year students face a specific decision. Once you convert your mortarboard into an offer letter, your student email may be deactivated, and with it your eligibility.
Before you graduate, do two things:
One more warning: your education status is tied to the exact email address you verified with. If you change your account email after graduating, your education status is revoked immediately, so move your files before touching your account settings.
If you are heading into the workforce, think about whether to move portfolio pieces to a personal Starter account or wait to join a future employer’s paid team.
A designer joining a Singapore agency will often be added to a company Professional or Organisation plan, so those polished case studies can migrate there. Just make sure you keep your own copies first, because your portfolio is yours, not your employer’s.
Getting Figma Education access is the easy part. The harder question is what you do with those tools once you have them, because clicking through the interface for a few weekends does not automatically make you employable.
I have seen plenty of students who can push pixels around a frame but stall the moment a hiring manager asks them to justify a design decision. Free access gives you the sandbox. It does not give you the method.
Employers in Singapore are not hiring you to draw pretty screens. They are hiring you to solve user problems in a way that maps to business outcomes, and that means research, wireframing, prototyping and building reusable design systems, all of which happen inside Figma but none of which the app teaches you on its own.
Think about a fintech startup near one-north hiring a junior product designer. They will want to see that you understand who the user is, why a screen exists, and how it connects to metrics the business actually cares about, which is why designers who grasp the most important digital marketing metrics to track tend to stand out.
A hobby-level skill gets you a nice-looking Dribbble shot. A portfolio backed by a recognised certificate is what clears the HR screening stage, because it signals structured competency rather than self-taught guesswork.
If you are a working adult in Singapore, or a student planning your first few years after graduation, the funding landscape is genuinely generous for accredited courses.
SkillsFuture Credit can be applied to eligible SSG-supported programmes, which means a meaningful chunk of your training cost may be covered rather than paid fully out of pocket. Singapore Citizens receive a base SkillsFuture Credit top-up, and eligible courses can attract SSG course fee funding on top of that.
Students cannot draw SkillsFuture Credit while still studying, but you can plan for it. Map out which accredited UX programme you want to take once you graduate and start earning, so the funding is ready when you are.
The natural next step from free Figma to a paid role is a career-focused programme that walks you through the full design process, not just the software.
Look for a pathway that covers user research, wireframing, interactive prototyping, and design systems, and that leaves you with a portfolio project you can defend in an interview. The combination of a real portfolio plus an accredited certificate is what turns free tool access into a job offer.
I have watched too many students trip over the same avoidable errors when claiming their Figma Education perks. Most of them cost nothing but time, and a few can derail a project entirely.
Let me walk you through the ones I see most often, and how to sidestep them.
The first mistake is signing up with a personal Gmail instead of your school email. When you use a @student.tp.edu.sg or similar institutional address, verification is usually quick. Use a personal account and your application is rejected outright, because verification only accepts school-issued addresses, so you will have to change your account email and start over right when you need access.
The second is oversharing during verification. Share only what Figma asks for, typically proof of enrolment. There is no need to upload your full NRIC scan or unrelated personal documents. A PDPA-aware habit here protects you: give the minimum required, nothing more.
The third is forgetting to re-verify. Education access is not permanent. You need to renew it periodically, and if you miss the window, your plan quietly downgrades and you lose your editor seat.
Beyond access, I see students working harder than they need to. Ignoring team libraries is a classic: instead of publishing a shared component set, they rebuild the same button or card in every file. Set up a library once and your whole group pulls from a single source of truth.
Not using version history is another quiet killer. Figma saves your progress automatically, and you can name checkpoints before big changes. If a teammate overwrites your layout, you restore it in seconds rather than rebuilding from memory.
Here is the scenario I always cite. A Ngee Ann Polytechnic group I knew let their education plan lapse the week before final submission, and their team file dropped back to view-only. Three students could see their prototype but not edit it, and the panic was real.
A simple calendar reminder set for a week before the renewal date would have prevented the whole mess. I now tell every student to block that date the moment they set up their team.
Avoid these five traps and your Figma setup stays reliable. While you are tidying your workflow, it is worth exploring other useful free tools worth adding to your workflow, so your student stack works together rather than against you.
So here is where we land. Figma Education hands you the same professional-grade design tools that agencies and product teams in Singapore use every day, and it costs you nothing beyond a few minutes of verification.
We walked through how quick that verification really is: a valid school email from a polytechnic, university, or ITE, a short form, and you are in with the paid features unlocked.
But I want to be honest with you about what that free access actually is. It is the starting line, not the finish.
Having the tools does not make you hireable, in the same way that owning a set of knives does not make you a chef. What clears an employer’s HR screening is a portfolio that shows real thinking, and structured UX/UI skills to back it up.
That is why I keep pushing students to build something locally relevant inside Figma: redesign the booking flow for a neighbourhood clinic, rethink a hawker centre ordering app, or fix a confusing government e-service. Recruiters here notice work rooted in problems they recognise.
If you want to go from a student experimenting in Figma to a designer who lands interviews, the next step is a proper foundation in research, wireframing, and usability, not just more tutorials.
For that, I would point you towards the WSQ What The Figma (WTF) Course at Equinet Academy, where you learn the full design process and build portfolio pieces you can actually show employers.
And if you are a working adult reading this over a student’s shoulder, plan for SkillsFuture-supported funding to make that training far more affordable.
Your free Figma account is ready. Now go build the portfolio that turns it into a career.
